INTRODUCTION
What is meant by MAGLEV?
MAGLEV = MAGNETIC + LEVITATION
Any thing which may levitate(raise or float) by means of a
magnetic power is simply called as magnetic levitation.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
The working of maglev train can be
explained by the following principles:
a) Principle of magnetic levitation
b) Principle of Propulsion
c) Principle of lateral guidance
LEVIATION
There are two types of levitation used in maglev trains namely:
1. Electro Magnetic 2. Electro Dynamic
Suspension (EMS) Suspension (EDS)
• Use attracting force • use repulsive forces
• inherently unstable • stable
• maintain leviation at zero speed • speed is required to achieve leviation
• complex feedback control required • no feedback required
PROPULSION
• An alternating current is ran through electromagnet coils on the guide walls of the
guide way. This creates a magnetic field that attracts and repels the superconducting
magnets on the train and propels the train forward.
• Braking is accomplished by sending an alternating current in the reverse direction so
that it is slowed by attractive and repulsive forces.
GUIDANCE
• Guidance is what keeps the train centered over the guideway. For high-speed maglev,
repulsive magnetic forces are used to achieve this . In the TransRapid, there are two
electromagnetic rails placed on the train facing either side of the guideway. These
rails keep the train from moving too far off course.
• In the MLX, guidance is coupled with the levitation system. The levitation rails on
either side of the train are connected to each other. Through this connection, when the
train moves closer to one side a restoring force is induced which pushes it back
towards the center.
ADVANTAGES
• Fast & efficient
• Environmental friendly
• Low maintainence cost
• Durability
DISADVANTAGES
• Initial setup cost is very high
EXISTING MAGLEV SYSTEMS
• Linimo , Japan – commercially automated urban maglev system commenced
on March 2005.
• Shangai maglev train , China – EMS high speed system started operation on
April 2004.
• HML 03 – The first EMS maglev opened to public at Daejeon South Korea in
1993.
PROPOSED PLANS
• BHEL ties up with SwissRapide AG to bring MAGLEV trains to india.
• Between Mumbai – Delhi
CONCLUSION
• Maglev technology holds great promise for the future. It has
the potential to be a cheaper, faster, safer, and greener form of
transportation than we have today. And with the help of some
electrical engineers, it will become all of these things. There
are possible applications for this technology in anything from
inter-city public transportation to cross-country trips.
