Categorical Syllogism: Moods and Figures

This document discusses categorical syllogisms, including: 1. Figures are the arrangements of the middle term in the premises, while moods classify the two premises and conclusion. 2. There are four figures - sub-pre, pre-pre, sub-sub, pre-sub - each with special valid mood rules to avoid logical fallacies. 3. The figures and their valid moods are summarized in tables, along with mnemonic names like Barbara and Celarent. 4. An assignment directs the reader to research hypothetical syllogisms and their moods at a provided website URL.

Figure and Mood of

Categorical Syllogism
Objectives
1. To determine the moods and figures
of categorical syllogism.

2. To know the special rules for figures

and its corresponding valid moods.
Terminology
Figure – the arrangement of the
middle term in the premise.

Mood – refers to the classification of

the two premises and conclusions

Special Rule for Figure 1 (Sub-Pre)
1. The minor premise must be affirmative (A
or I) – to avoid illicit major when the minor
premise is made

2. The major premise must be universal

(A-E)– otherwise violation of undistributed
middle term will be committed.
Valid Moods for Figure 1 (Sub-Pre)

1. AAA – BARBARA
2. EAE- CELARENT
3. AII – DARII
4. EIO - FERIO
Special Rules Figure 2 (Pre-Pre)
1. One premise must be negative to
avoid the fallacy of undistributed
middle term.

2. The major premise must be universal

(A or E) otherwise violation of illicit
major term will be committed.
Valid Moods for Figure 2 (Pre-Pre)
1. EAE – CESARE
2. AEE – CAMESTRE
3. EIO – FESTINO
4. AOO - BAROCO
Special Rules Figure 3 (Sub-Sub)
1. The minor premise must be
affirmative to avoid fallacy of illicit
major.

2. The conclusion must be particular to

avoid fallacy of illicit minor.
Valid Moods for Figure 3 (Sub-Sub)

1. AAI – dArAptI
2. IAI – dIsAmIs
3. AII – dAtIsI
4. EAO – fELAptOn
5. OAO – bOcArdO
6. EIO - fErIsOn
Special Rules Figure 4 (Pre-Sub)
1. If the major premise is affirmative, the minor
premise must be universal to avoid
undistributed middle term.

2. If the minor premise is affirmative, the

conclusion must be particular to avoid illicit minor
term.

3. If either premise is negative, the major premise

must be universal to avoid illicit major.
Valid Moods for Figure 4 (Pre-Sub)
1. AAI – brAmAntIp
2. AEE – cAmEnEs
3. IAI – dImArIs
4. EAO – fEsApO
5. EIO - frEsIsOn
Summary
 Figure refers to the arrangement of middle
term in the premises.
 Moods refers to the arrangement of

propositions
 There are four figures of categorical

syllogism namely; (sub-pre), (pre-pre),

(sub-sub) and (pre-sub).
 Every figure governed by special rules

and valid moods.

Assignment
