PROJECT WORK
In project work I had done modeling of passenger
vehicle with conventional bogie .
In that I had modeled a bogie which is having a stiff
axle (does not take radial position on curve track).
With this bogie I modeled the Indian railway car &
evaluate the performance parameters .
Passenger vehicle Model generated in the
GENSYS:
PRESENT WORK
In actual the track is very long with variations like
irregularities , curves, cants & transition curves.
I modeled the track according to the real situation to
verify the results obtained through experiments.
Track model: Vehicle is influenced by the flexibility
of track. The properties of the track affect the
behaviour of the vehicle.
PRESENT WORK contd….
The track has degree of freedom in lateral & vertical
directions. The rail masses have vertical and lateral
degrees of freedom, but they do not have any inertia.
All different stiffnesses existing between rail head &
subgrade (e.g. Ballast & pad stiffness) are
concentrated to one lateral & two vertical stiffnesses
between track piece & ground.
PRESENT WORK contd….
Track Irregularities:
A vehicle running on a railway track is subjected to lateral &
vertical influences due to track irregularities.
track irregularities have generally great impact on the wheel-
rail forces and the ride comfort.

Rail modeling:
Rail profile is generated by giving the profile dimensions of wheel
rail for different conditions like new wheel, partially & fully
worned profile.

SIMULATION RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS
Performance is evaluated on the basis of
Stability on tangent track
Curving performance
Derailment
Ride comfort
Wear
Vertical load variation
SIMULATION RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS contd…..
Stability on tangent track: It is dependent on
lateral displacement of axle.
Graph shows that as speed increases the lateral
displacement of the bogie axle increases .
SIMULATION RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS contd…..
Curving Performance: On curve carbody instability is the
main problem. During curve negotiation on horizontal
track vehicle is subjected to centrifugal acceleration &
gravity.
SIMULATION RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS contd…..
Acceleration in track plane is given by
Ride indices of ride comfort can be obtained from the rms
accelerations by using suitable frequency dependent
weighting functions.
Ride index upto
2 is acceptable
SIMULATION RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS contd…..
Prediction of wear:
1. Wear number: wear is predicted by the energy
dissipation in contact patch. Energy dissipation is
defined as the energy loss per meter of travelled
distance. Which is given by
E= F. (Nm/m)
This equation is called as wear number.
SIMULATION RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS contd…..
Result shows that speed beyond 80 kmph have wear
index more than limiting value. At speed between 70-
80 kmph the wear of the right wheel is suddenly
increases with speed.

Derailment: It is a situation where the rail vehicle runs
off the track.
Causes of derailment:
1. Flange climb
2. Track irregularities
Criteria for prediction of derailment:
1. Critical derailment coefficient(Nadal’s formula )
SIMULATION RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS contd…..

In general the derailment standards used are Critical

Vertical Wheel-rail Load: For Outer and inner
wheels/rails Qin < Q0< Qout, where Q0 is the
nominal vertical wheel load. The outer wheel-rail
contact is close to the wheel flange. If the inner
wheel-rail contact is lost the vehicle may overturn
about the outer rail.
PROPOSED WORK
It is proposed to model a passenger vehicle using a
radial bogie design with long train.
Radial bogie is such kind of bogie which takes radial
position on curved track.
PROPOSED WORK contd….
This type of railway vehicle will be modeled by
defining the coupling between the carbody & bogie.
This will be done by giving the properties of the
damper coefficients & its coupling co-ordinates with
respect to bogie and carbody.
Similarly the coupling will be defined for the springs
between bogie and axle.
This coupling will be stiffness type.
PROPOSED WORK contd….
After modeling of radial bogie the performance of the
rail vehicle is evaluated on the basis of stability on
tangent track , wear index, ride index , load variations
on wheel & derailment.
These parameters will validate through the actual
experimental results.
Concluding whether the radial bogie design is
justified over the conventional bogie.
