INTRODUCTION
• Solar heating and cooling technology receive the thermal energy from
sun and utilize this energy to provide space heating and cooling for
residential, commercial and industrial applications.
• The primary requirement of Space Heating and Cooling System is to
setup the light collectors with higher efficiency.
• Eliminating the need for electricity

SOLAR SPACE METHODS
A solar space heating system can
consist of a passive system, an active
system, or a combination of both.
Passive systems are typically less
costly and less complex than active
systems.
3
PASSIVE SOLAR SPACE HEATING SYSTEM
• This system operates without any pumps, blowers or other mechanical devices
• Here air is circulated in the building through convection method.
• The building design for this system includes
1. Function as solar collector
2. Solar store house
3. Good heat trap
Based on design and principles used in space heating ,this system has five
general categories
4. Direct gain
5. Thermal storage wall
6. Attached sunspace
7. Roof Storage
4
8. Convective loop
1. Direct Gain
• Building has south facing wall with large windows
• Two layer glass minimizes heat losses
• Solar radiation entering through windows falls on
Thick concrete , slate or brick floors and is absorbed
and stored as heat
• Air is heated by radiation and convection from the
floors and walls
• Covering the windows with shutters at night reduces
heat losses
5
2. Thermal Storage Wall
• A large wall like mass which absorbs
solar radiation and stores heat
• Placed directly behind the large south
facing window
• Example- Troumbe wall, made of
concrete brick of 20cm thick,
painted with black colour to absorb
more radiation
6
4. Roof storage
• The heat is absorbed and stored in water
about 0.25m deep contained in plastic
bags held in blackened steel boxes on
the house roof.
• Heat is transferred from the heated
water to the rooms below by conduction
through a metal ceiling.
7
5. Convective Loop
• Air passing upward through the
collector is heated and enters the
building through floor vents
• The cool, denser air leaving the
building returns to the bottom of the
collector and is reheated.
8
ACTIVE SOLAR SPACE HEATING SYSTEM
• It consists of collectors that collect and absorb solar radiation combined with electric
fans or pumps to transfer and distribute solar heat.
• Active systems generally have an energy storage system to provide heat when the sun is
not shining.
• Two types of heating system
1. Hot water system
2. Hot air system
• Liquid-based systems heat water and air-based systems heat air in the collector.
• Both of these systems collect and absorb solar radiation, then transfer the solar heat
directly to the interior space or to a storage system, from which the heat is distributed.
• An auxiliary or backup system provides heat when storage is discharged. Liquid systems
are more often used when storage is included.
