Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection: Team 3: Cercado, Chiong, Esperida

Central line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI) occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream through a central line catheter. CLABSI signs include fever and chills. It can be caused by contamination during insertion, skin flora, healthcare workers, or equipment. Risk factors include older age, poor nutrition, and immunosuppression. Prevention strategies involve proper hand hygiene, sterile equipment and antiseptics during insertion, and reviewing line necessity.

Central line associated

blood stream Infection

TEAM 3: CERCADO, CHIONG,

ESPERIDA
INTRODUCTION
A central line bloodstream
infection (CLABSI) occurs
when bacteria or other germs
enter the patient’s central line
and then enter into their
bloodstream. (Johns Hopkins,
2021)
Central Line

”central venous access device”

Signs and symptoms

• Fever
• Chills
• Soreness or redness around
the catheter site
CAuses
1. Contamination on insertion;
2. The patient’s skin flora;
3. The healthcare professional accessing the central
venous access device;
4. Central venous access devices (CVAD) hub
colonization;
5. Contaminated infusion or components of IV set;
6. Hematogenous spread from other sites (e.g. through
the bloodstream from another infection); and
7. Non-intact dressing.

Prevention

Doctors and nurses should always clean

their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-
based hand rub, wear sterile, protective gear
and clean a patient’s skin with an antiseptic
cleanser before putting in a catheter.
Healthcare workers should also clean their
hands and wear gloves before handling a
catheter opening or changing a bandage
covering the catheter area.

selection, with subclavian line necessity with
vein as prompt removal of
the preferred site for non- unnecessary lines.

As a patient with a central line, these steps might help you to prevent CLABSIs:

o Ask your doctors and nurses to explain why you

need the catheter and how long you will have it.

o Make sure that all doctors and nurses caring for

you clean their hands with soap and water or an
alcohol-based hand rub before and after caring for
you.

o If your bandage comes off or becomes wet or dirty,

tell your nurse or doctor immediately.
As a patient with a central line, these steps might help you to prevent CLABSIs:

o Inform your nurse or doctor if the area around

your catheter is sore or red.

o Do not let family and friends who visit touch the

catheter or the tubing.

o Make sure family and friends clean their hands

with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub
before and after visiting you.
