MARS ORBITER MISSION
(MOM)
PRESENTED BY – PIYUSH KUMAR
CLASS – VII ‘A’
INTRODUCTION
Mars Orbiter mission (MOM)is mars orbiter that was
successfully launched into earth orbit on 5th November
2013 by Indian space research organisation (ISRO). The
MOM probe lifted-off from the First Launch Pad at
Sriharikota near Chennai , using a Polar Satellite Launch
Vehicle (PSLV) rocket C25 at 09:08 UTC (2:38 PM IST) on
5 November 2013. The total project cost may be up to 454
crore (US$69million). K.Radhakrishnan was the PSLV-XL
spacecraft launch Mission Director . Mylswamy
Annadurai is the Program Director and DR.K.Sivan is the
Project Director . S.K.Shivkumar of ISAC was responsible
for the orbiting payload and also oversaw design and
development of the orbiter.

MOM TRAJECTORY…
ESCAPING THE
GRAVITATIONAL FIELD OF
MANGALYAAN .
The rocket that ISRO used PSLV , have to
escape the gravity field of earth at the speed
of 11.2km/sec but at that time the
mangalyaan moving forward and the
fortune of ISRO is to good one meteor
bumped into that satellite and increased
the speed of satellite from 4.4km/s to
22.1km/sec

POLAR SATELLITE LAUNCH
VEHICLE (PSLV)
4 - STAGES OF
CONSTRUCTION ..
PSLV was designed and developed at Vikaram
Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC),Thiruvananthapuram,
Kerala .
It was developed to allow India to launch its Indian
Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites into sun synchronous
orbits.
Launch vehicle is used is PSLV-XL
PSLV-XL is the updated version of Polar Satellite
Launch Vehicle .
The PSLV has four stages using solid and liquid
propulsion system alternatevly.
It has five successful launch In history.
PAYLOADS :-
•LAP
•MCC
•MSM
•TIS
•MENCA
payload Primary objectives Weight (KG)
Mars Colour Camera Optical Imaging . 1.27 kg
(MCC)
Thermal Infrared Imaging Map Surface Composition 3.2 kg
Spectrometer (TIS) and minearlogy .
Methane Sensor of Mars Detection of Methane 2.94 kg
(MSM) Presence.
Mars Enospheric Neutral Study of the Neutral 3.56 kg
Composition Analyser composition of Martian
(MENCA) upper atmosphere .
Lyman Alpha Photometer Study of the Escape 1.97 kg
(LAP) processes of Martian
upper atmosphere
through
Deuterium/Hydrogen.
LYMAN ALPHA PHOTOMETER (LAP)
Lyman Alpha photometer (LAP) is an absorption cell photometer .It
measures the relative abundance of deuterium and hydrogen from Lyman-
alpha emission in the Martian upper atmosphere (typically Exosphere and
exobase). Measurement of D/H (deuterium to hydrogen abundance ratio)
allows us to understand especially the loss process of water from the
planet .
The objectives of the instruments are as follows:-
Estimation of D/H ratio .
Estimation of escape flux of H2 corona
c. Generation of Hydrogen and Deuterium coronal profiles.
METHANE SENSOR FOR MARS
(MSM)
Methane sensor of mars (MSM) ids designed to measure
(CH4) in the Martian atmosphere with PBB accuracy and
map its sources . Data is acquired only over illuminated
scene as the sensor measures reflected solar radiation .
Methane concentration in the Martian atmosphere
undergoes spatial and temporal variations. Hence global
data is collected during every orbit .
MARS EXOSPHERIC NEUTRAL
COMPOSITION ANALYSER (MENCA)
Mars exospheric neutral composition analyser (MENCA) is
a quadruple mass spectrometer capable of analysing the
neutral composition in the range of 1 to 300 AMU with
unit mass resolution . The heritage of this payload is from
Chandra’s Altitudinal Composition Explorer (CHANCE)
payload aboard the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) in
Chandrayaan – 1 mission
MARS COLOR CAMERA
(MCC)
This tri-color Mars color camera gives images &
information about the surface features and composition of
Martian surface . They are useful to monitor the dynamic
events and weather of Mars . MCC will also be used for
probing the two satellites of Mars – Phobos & Deimos . It
also provides the context information for other science
payloads .
THERMAL INFRARED IMAGING
SPECTROMETER (TIS)
Thermal Infrared imaging spectrometer (TIS) measure the
thermal emission and can be operated during both day
and night . Temperature and emissivity are the two basic
physical parameter estimated from thermal emission
measurement. Many minerals and soil types have
characteristic spectra in TIR region . TIS can map
mineralogy of Mars .
