SOLAR ENERGY

Solar Panel Street Lights

INTRODUCTION
Solar Energy system is designed for
outdoor application especially in un-
electrified remote rural areas.

This system is an ideal application for

campus and village street lighting.

The system is provided with battery

storage backup sufficient to operate
the light for significant hours daily.

The system is provided with automatic

ON/OFF time switch for dusk to dawn
operation and overcharge / deep
discharge prevention cut-off with LED
indicators.
SOLAR ENERGY
Solar power is the generation of electricity from
sunlight. This can be direct as with photovoltaic
(PV), or indirect as with concentrating solar
power (CSP), where the sun's energy is focused to
boil water which is then used to provide power.
Solar power has the potential to provide over
1,000 times total world energy consumption in
2008, though it provided only 0.02% of the total
that year. If it continues to double in use every
two to three years, or less, it would become the
dominant energy source this century. Solar
power is a predictably intermittent energy source
meaning that whilst solar power is not available
at all times, we can predict with a very good
degree of accuracy when it will and will not be
available. Some technologies, such as solar
thermal concentrators have an element of
thermal storage, such as molten salts. These store
spare solar energy in the form of heat which can
be made available overnight or during periods
that solar power is not available to produce
electricity. The increased intensity of sunlight
above the atmosphere also increases generation
efficiency.
Source of Solar Energy
 The 89 petawatts of sunlight reaching the
Earth's surface is plentiful – almost 6,000
times more than the 15 terawatts of average
electrical power consumed by humans.
 Additionally solar electric generation has the
highest power density among renewable
energies.
 Solar power is pollution-free during use.
 Production end-wastes and emissions are
manageable using existing pollution controls.
End-of-use recycling technologies are under
development.
 Photovoltaic installations can operate for
many years with little maintenance or
intervention after their initial set-up, so after
the initial capital cost of building any solar
power plant operating costs are extremely
low compared to existing Power technologies.
 Solar electric generation is economically
superior where grid connection or fuel
transport is difficult, costly or impossible
Long-standing examples include satellites,
island communities’ remote locations and
ocean vessels.
Solar Panel Street Light
 Solar Panel street lights are a very good
example on what can be done with solar
energy. A growing number of solar street
lighting projects are running in Africa, Asia
and the Middle East.
 The concept is straightforward and we shall
see more countries migrating this way.
 Solar street lights are cost-effective, cost-
saving and reliable.
 The solar panel converts the sun's energy to
dc electricity. Voltage is then regulated to a
specific value by an electronic circuit to
charge the battery. A solar controller
protects the battery from too low and over
charge. LED, HID and CF lamps require a
high voltage, particular current, and
frequency to work. It is the ballast's task to
feed the lamp properly. A timer or photocell
does the job of switching the light from dusk
to dawn. Solar powered street lights models,
intensity and color can even be adjusted.

Solar Panel
Its task is to convert the sun's energy into
electricity. Different sizes and power outputs
are available. They have to be carefully chosen
for the desired application. Solar panels should
be able to withhold and deliver in extreme
weather conditions. Some are even
designed unbreakable (vandal proof), others will work
well in overcast weather. A 20 Year Warranty on good
solar panels is not unusual.
Solar Controller
The basic circuitry on most solar powered
street lights consists essentially of an automatic
battery charger fed by the solar panel and a
lighting controller automated for dusk to dawn
operation. Automatic lighting can be triggered
by a photocell or a timer. On some models a special
feature dims the light at a given time, thus allowing a
longer operation time.
Battery
Maintenance-free batteries are generally used on
solar street lights. In addition to providing energy
for dusk to dawn operation, they must also be able
to supply few days of backup power in case of
bad weather or charger failure.
Accessories
Lamp
 The choice of lamps to use in
solar powered street lights is
dictated by the kind of application
you're after:
 LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) also
known as SSL (solid-state lighting)
have a good color rendition. A cluster
of extra or ultra bright LEDs forms
the lamp. LEDs consume a fraction of the
energy of comparable lighting and have a very long
life span. Solar LED street lights are an emerging
and promising application for LED technology.
 CF (Compact Fluorescent) lamps produce a white
light and are used in places where color rendering
is desired.
 HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamps, mainly LPS
and MH:
 LPS (Low Pressure Sodium) lamps generate a
monochromatic yellow-orange light and are used
when color rendering is not an issue. They have a
lifespan of up to 18,000 hours
 MH (Metal Halide) lamps produce a clean white
light and are perfect for applications where color
rendering is essential.
