Introduction
“Rus” derives from an ancient name for the Volga River;
Russia was a communist state until 1993;
with rich oil fields, coal mines, mineral reserves, natural
gas and a market economy, Russia is an economic
superpower;
has the fastest growing economies in the world;
international business people are looking to break into
Russian market.
General features
meeting etiquette – firm handshake while
maintaining direct eye contact; friends kiss on the cheek
three times;
naming conventions – Russians have three names:
first name, middle name, which is a version of the
father’s first name and last name;
dinning etiquette – guests have to remove their
outdoor shoes, to dress in office clothes, to offer to help
the hostess with the preparation or clearing up after the
meal is served.
Gift giving
Russians take pleasure in giving and receiving gifts;
on receiving an invitation to a home, luxury chocolates,
a scarf, perfume or jewelry for the hostess would be a
welcome gift;
male guests are expected to bring flowers;
acceptable gifts for business meetings are items for the
office, quality pens and selected wines.
Business meetings
appointments are necessary and should be made as far
in advance as possible;
you should arrive punctually for meetings;
be prepared to be kept waiting;
offer a Russian translation of all related business
documents;
meetings are frequently interrupted to make you give
more concessions during a negotiation.
Dress code
Russian business people pay a lot of attention to how
they are dressed;
they wear dark colored, conservative business suits to
meetings;
women should wear suits with skirts that cover the knees
rather than pants-suits.
Business negotiations
Russians do not like being rushed;
don’t force a decision through high-pressure talk -> will make you
appear impatient, rude and incapable of business interactions;
include technical experts on your negotiating team;
hierarchy is important to Russians -> showing respect for seniority
and recognizing the hierarchical structure is vital for establishing
and maintaining strong business relationships;
Russians see negotiations as win-lose;
they view compromise as weakness-> often use time
as a tactic, especially if they know that you have a deadline.
Conclusions
Russian market offers great opportunities;
it is a difficult market;
values that Russians respect include:
collectivity;
formality;
patience;
trust and loyalty.
