COMMISSION ON
HUMAN RIGHTS:
CONSCIENCE OF
THE GOVERNMENT
BY PATRICIA MAE A. BELEN
GRADE 12 PEARL HUMSS
WHAT IS COMMISSION ON
HUMAN RIGHTS (CHR) ?
COMMISSION ON HUMAN
RIGHTS (CHR)
The Commission on Human Rights is
an independent organization in the
Philippines with the purpose of
promoting and ensuring the protection
and respect of human rights. It is
created under the 1987 Constitution of
the Philippines.
The poster about Commission on
Human Rights (CHR)
My response about the abolition of the
Commission on Human Rights
The poster render their message which contains statements “Stop
protecting criminals”, “Don’t waste taxpayer’s money to pay for
incompetent government agencies”, and “Abolish the CHR NOW”. We can
conclude that individuals behind this argument wants Commission on
Human Rights in the Philippines to officially end their service to the public
for the reasons that they see situations such as treating criminals in a good
way than the other one most specially the persons who are inclined in
government who turned to be a criminal one. In addition, individuals who
were caught in the war on drugs campaign are said to have the power
coming from the Commission on Human Rights or what we called bias.
Furthermore, Filipinos believed that they are wasting large amount of
money for government agencies that are lacking necessarily ability or
skills in serving the people inside the country. But if we look beyond, the
poster is calling public attention specially President Duterte’s supporters.
People think that CHR is the protector of the criminals in our country.
My response about the abolition of the
Commission on Human Rights
The Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines is an
independent organization aimed at promoting and ensuring
the protection and respect of human rights in the
Philippines. Therefore, they are protecting all of us no matter
what our social status we have in life. By that information
about the Commission on Human Rights, I argue my stand
that I do not agree on abolishing the Commission on Human
Rights in the Philippines. As a student and a Filipino, I do
believe that human rights are essential for individuals for us
to live in peaceful environment. Without human rights,
powerful individuals can manipulate things we have, even
ourselves. Without it, history can repeats itself such as
becoming slaves on our own country which I know that
everyone do not want it to happen again.
My response about the abolition of the
Commission on Human Rights
In addition, human trafficking and sexual exploitation can
occur if we don’t have human rights. In the same manner,
there are implications if we are agree on ending our
Commission on Human Rights such as unable to express our
thoughts for a certain things or events happening which a
democratic world should have. Another one is discrimination
as well as unequal protection to the individuals because of
being different and only basing on race, religion ethnicity,
and more. Most of all, I am against abolishing it because our
freedom, an essential part of our lives, can vanished and
ourselves can be degraded if this issue really happen. Also, I
do believe that everyone should be given a chance to prove
their selves that they are innocent, to prove that people can
change for the better.
My response about the abolition of the
Commission on Human Rights
However, there is an statement by CHR
chair Chito Gascon about abolishing the
Commission on Human Rights: “Any
discussion to abolish CHR or any other
institution for that matter can be taken in
the proposed constitutional reform
process. In other words, we shall cross the
bridge when we get there,”
We should think about various results in making
decisions in life. Like the issue on abolishing the
Commission on Human Rights, there are many
things that can affect people in our country by
just simply stopping the protector of our rights as
a human. Nobody is perfect in this world and
everyone makes mistakes. There’s a place for
improvement and chances. Let us fight for our
own rights! Fly high Commission on Human
Rights!
