Saint Namdev: Biography Prsentation

Sant Namdev was a prominent poet and saint of the Bhakti movement in India. He was born in 1270 CE in Narasi-bamani, Maharashtra. From a young age he had a strong devotion to the god Vitthal. He composed around 2,500 spiritual poems called abhangs in the Marathi language and his works helped spread the Bhakti movement beyond Maharashtra. Namdev had a profound spiritual experience meeting with Jnaneshwar and spent his life singing bhajans, composing poetry, and spreading the message of devotion to God.

INTRODUCTION

Name: Sant Namdev, Bhagt Namdeo

Born: October 29, 1270

(Narasi-bamani, In Hingoli, Maharashtra) 

Father Name: Damashet 

Mother Name: Gona Bai  


CHILDHOOD

 Two year old:

First correct word he speak out was 'viṭhala‘

 Seven year old:

Prepared a pair of cymbals

 Namdev offers food to vithoba


MARRIED LIFE

 Wife : Radha Bai

  Son: Nara, Vitha, Gonda, Mahada

 Daughter : Limbai

 Neglected his worldly duties

 Spend hour after hour sitting  and discussing

spiritual matters with Viṭhoba


MEETING WITH JNANADEV

pandharapur to see him

ADOPTING A GURU

“If you want to be absolutely happy, fill this


world with Bhajan and the sacred Name of the
Lord. The Lord is the world itself. Give up all
ambitions or desires. Let them take care of
themselves. Be content only with the name of
Vitṭhal. You need not undergo any hardship or
penalty in order to go to heaven. Vaikuntha will
come to you of itself. ”
