Basis Weight Sensor Training Guide

This document provides an overview and instructions for maintaining a Honeywell basis weight sensor. The sensor measures the weight of paper using radioactive sources and converts the measurement to grams per square meter. It has two main parts: a source containing the radiation capsule and a receiver containing an ion chamber and amplifier. Key steps in maintenance include checking the background voltage, shutter operation, and air pressure. Troubleshooting involves monitoring various voltage readings to identify potential issues.

Sensor

Sensor introduction and

maintenance

For internal purpose only

Objectives
After this training, you will be able to :

- Identify and understanding part that include at the assemblies of

the basis weight sensor and what it’s function.

- How to check the sensor healthy and understanding what the

Overview
Basis weight is defined as weight (mass) of paper per
unit area. In Da Vinci Quality Control System we use
the unit of measurement grams per square meter
(GSM).

Honeywell has several sensor depend on the basis

weight range and Ash range

Measurement principles

The Basis Weight sensor measure weight of paper

using the beta emitting sources as Promethium-
147 , Krypton-85 or Strontium-90.

The energy that given by the source will be

measured by receiver and change it to voltage.

The basic physical principle is : as the basis

weight increases, the signal at receiver will be
lower.

Sensor introduction

Sensor has two part.

• Source (normally upper head) is contain a
radiation source.

• Receiver (lower head) is contain an ion

chamber and a amplifier to measure the
radiation received and sent voltage to PMP
to be convert to basis weight value

Important thing to remember from Basis weight source

1. Basis weight source using air controlled by solenoid as
way of opening the shutter.
2. Air will go to regulator and controlled by air solenoid.
3. The shutter will be on “CLOSE” position during power off
4. The solenoid wiring connected to radiation lamp for safety,
if one red lamp is broken than the solenoid will not working
5. Flag move by electric solenoid
6. During working with source, pay attention to shutter
condition

Sensor Operation - Background

Background
- Sensor put off sheet, then system will
measure the basis weight signal.
- This will be known as background volt
- During this operation, the basis weight emits
no radiation
- The typical value is 16 until 50 mV
- If the voltage is too big, adjust the R4 on the
detector amplifier card

measure the basis weight signal.
- This will be known as background volt
- During this operation, the basis weight emits
no radiation

Check this value :

• Bkgd volt < 50mv
• Air volt > 4 (recommend)
• Flag volt < air volt
• Dfrac < 1

Using sensor maintenance we can

determine which problem that we
might have.

Air volt = reading during shutter open

Flag volt = reading during shutter open
and flag goes in
Dfrac = TOFA comapare with FAnow

Preventive maintenance

For preventive maintenance do following stop when

have time (ex. During stop)
- Clean and check kapton window conditon
- Check air pressure, check source hose condition for
any air leakage
- Check red – green lamp at radiation indicator
- Do background operation (30x), check for stability
- Do reference operation (30x), check for stability
- Do sample check using mylar sample

to check Faratio , if dfrac > 0.1 change T0FA
