Grid- A group of lines that form
imaginary squares on a map that
help locate places using coordinates.
We use a special type of grid called a
Coordinate Grid to locate places on the Earth.
The lines are called latitude and longitude
lines, and they give us absolute location, an
exact location on the Earth, using a system of
coordinates. Carl Junction is located at
coordinates:
37.1767° N, 94.5655° W
Longitude Lines
Longitude lines are (LONG) vertical lines
that run north and south. They are also
called Meridians, and they measure in
degrees east and west of the Prime
Meridian.
The Prime Meridian is a longitude line
at 0 degrees that divides the Earth into
the Eastern and Western hemispheres.
Latitude Lines
Latitude lines are (FLAT) horizontal
lines that run east and west. They are
also called Parallels, and measure in
degrees north and south of the
Equator.
These 4 special lines of latitude
define the Climate Zones of the
Earth
Arctic Circle at 66 ½ N
Tropic of Cancer at 23 ½ N
Tropic of Capricorn at 23 ½ S
Antarctic Circle at 66 ½ S
The Equator is at 0 degrees latitude
and divides the Earth into the Northern
and Southern hemispheres.
