ISSUES
INTRODUCTI
ON
The term "globalization" refers to the growing
interdependence of the world's economies, cultures,
and populations, because of cross-border trade in
commodities and services, technology, and investment,
people, and information flows. In global business, it
refers to as the increased flow of goods, services,
capital, people, and ideas across international
boundaries. Over many years, countries have formed
economic alliances to enable these flows. However,
with the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, the
term acquired popularity as these cooperative
agreements influenced modern life.

THE
ENVIRONMENTAL
ISSUES
01
INCREASED
TRANSPORT OF
GOODS
Before, products were produced, consumed, and sold locally. But now the
products travelled faster all around the globe. However, the means of
transport resulted to the following:

Increased Habitat Invasive

emissions destruction species
02
ECONOMIC
SPECIALIZATIO
N
Unfortunately, overspecialization can lead to serious environmental issues,
often in the form of habitat loss, deforestation, or natural resource overuse. A
few examples include:

Illegal deforestation Overfishing in Overdependence on

in Brazil coastal areas cash crops
It’s worth considering that globalization has allowed some
nations to specialize in producing various energy
commodities, such as oil, natural gas, and timber. Nations
that depend on energy sales to fund a large portion of their
national budgets, along with those that note “energy
security” as a priority, are more likely to take intervening
actions in the market in the form of subsidies or laws that
make transitioning to renewable energy more difficult. The
main byproduct of these energy sources comes in the form
of greenhouse gas emissions, which significantly contribute
to global warming and climate change.

change invasive specie
● According to the World Wildlife
Fund’s recent Living Planet Report,
the population sizes of all organisms—
including mammals, birds, fish,
amphibians, and reptiles— have
decreased 68 percent since 1970.
04
INCREASED
AWARENESS
Greater connectivity and higher rates of international travel
have made it easier than ever for individuals to see the effects
of deforestation, habitat loss, and climate change on the
environment
05
CLIMATE CHANGE
It is driven by human activities driving up the earth's temperature which not only
affects the weather but also the oceans, food and health (National Geographic, 2017).

● A phenomenon called the greenhouse

effect where greenhouse gasses such as
methane, chlorofluorocarbon, carbon
dioxide trap the sun's heat in the
atmosphere which increases the earth's
temperature. The production of these
greenhouse gasses is the result of human
activities like burning of fossil fuels
brought by industrialization.

06
DEGLOBALIZATI
ON MAY WORSEN
EMISSIONS
DEGLOBALIZATION MAY WORSEN
EMISSION
Deglobalization may not always result in lower emission of dangerous gasses
like CO2, SO2 and NO2 and may even aggravate them. The globalization can
stimulate environmentally favorable technology improvements that can be
transferred from countries with severe environmental restrictions to pollution
havens through what is known as the technique effect.

Globalization encompasses not just the movement of finished goods, but also
the transfer of intermediate, capital, and technological goods. That means
international firms with clean, cutting-edge technologies can share their green
expertise with countries with lax environmental regulations.
International corporations employ cleaner forms of energy than local
corporations, resulting in more energy-efficient manufacturing processes. As
a result of deglobalization, these ecologically benign technologies may not
be passed on to countries attempting to go green. Anti-globalization
movements are gaining strength, which means less specialization in
industries where countries have comparative advantages.

This can result in poor resource allocation, resulting in the waste of limited
economic and ecological resources. If each country must manufacture to
meet its own home demand, this could lead to duplication of manufacturing
processes and, as a result, an increase in local emissions.
a) Iran sanctions backfire for the environment
•Iran began refining its own crude oil, which includes ten times the number of pollutants as the
oil it used to purchase.

•But it raised public awareness about labor and environmental standards through international
platforms such as fair trade and eco labeling. Consumer tastes have changed because of the
effectiveness of this environmental public awareness campaign. As a result, eco-friendly
products allow producers to expand their customer base.

b) WTO and RTAs help protect the environment

•World Trade Organization has sparked enthusiasm among its member countries for
sustainable development and environmentally friendly trade policies.

•Several WTO trade-related initiatives are compatible with environmental protection and
natural resource sustainability. For example, the WTO's green clauses require countries to
protect human, animal, and plant life while conserving finite natural resources.
• Regional trade agreements, or RTAs, are another component of globalization
that support ecologically sustainable policies in addition to the WTO.
Countries who want to join RTAs are forced to accept environmental
cooperation agreements at the same time.

• Many nations, like Canada and those in the European Union, have created
national regulations requiring environmental impact evaluations prior to
signing any trade agreement. That means that any country that forms trade
agreements with them is obligated to sign environmental cooperation
agreements as well.
c) China leading while the U.S. lagging.
• China has risen from being one of the world's worst polluters to a global leader
championing the fight against climate change and pollution

• In contrast, a country like the United States has been quietly slipping away from
the fight against climate change, in part due to Donald Trump's anti-globalization views.
In keeping with his anti-globalization rhetoric during the 2016 US election campaign, he
pulled the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement.
ADDITIONAL
IMPACT TO
ENVIRONMENT
1. Increased Product
Consumption
● Increased consumption leads to
more commodities being
produced, putting more pressure
on the environment.
● The amount of fuel used to
transport goods has resulted in an
increase in pollution levels in the
environment. And also resulted in
other several environmental
issues, such as noise pollution and
intrusion into the landscape.
2. Transportation

● It placed a burden on
nonrenewable energy sources like
gasoline.
● Gases released by aircraft have
resulted in ozone layer depletion.
● Industrial trash has been loaded
onto ships and thrown into the
oceans because of industry.
3. Various chemicals have
been thrown into the soil.
● Plastic, as a non-biodegradable
product, has been identified as one of
the leading harmful contaminants in
numerous studies over the years.
● Hazardous materials like chemicals
thrown into the soil harmed plants by
interfering with their genetic makeup.
● Mountains that are being cut in many
places of the world to create space for a
passing tunnel or motorway cause a
long-term environmental consequence.
Researchers believe that the solution to this problem resides in
the problem itself, namely, that globalization can help
construct a better framework that is both economically feasible
and environmentally friendly.
TREATIES,
INTERNATIONAL
ORGANIZATIONS
AND DOMESTIC
LAWS
Definition of Treaties,
International
Organization and
Domestic Laws
• According to Britannica.com; Treaty is a binding formal agreement,
contract, or other written instrument that establishes obligations between
two or more subjects of international law (primarily states and
international organizations).

• A treaty is an agreement between sovereign States (countries) and in some

cases international organisations, which is binding at international law. ...
Treaties can be bilateral (between two States) or multilateral (between
three or more States). Treaties can also include the creation of rights for
individuals
International Organizations plays specific role of helping each members to
specific role of fighting poverty, health diseases such as Covid-19, HIV,
problems in hunger, and injustices, each organization has a major goals.
Example of International Organizations are United Nation, World Health
Organization, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade
Organization and UNESCO.
Domestic Laws
Is a synonymous to National Law. It is
different from International Law
Treaties relating
to environmental
conservation
Environmental Conservation is the practice of
preserving the natural world to prevent it from
collapsing as a result of human activities, such
as unsustainable agriculture, deforestation and
burning fossils.
The Paris Agreement
• According to nrdc.org, the goal of Paris Agreement is to address climate change and its
negative impacts. The agreement aims to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas
emission in an effort to limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2 degrees
celsius above preindustrial levels

• How Many Countries Are in the Paris Agreement? Since 2015, 197 countries—nearly
every nation on earth, with the last signatory being war-torn Syria—have endorsed the
Paris Agreement. Of those, 190 have solidified their support with formal approval. The
major emitting countries that have yet to formally join the agreement are Iran, Turkey,
and Iraq.

• Why Is the Paris Agreement Important? Human-generated emissions cause global

warming, Global warming threatens climate systems. Climate change endangers human
health..
Why are so many important international
accords signed in Paris?
Because Paris is a major city for politics and diplomacy and
it's the capital of France, a major economical and military
power. Most of the former multinational wars in Europe did
take place between France and Germany.
Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary
Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal

• The Basel Convention regulates the transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and
other wastes and obliges its Parties to ensure that such wastes are managed and disposed
of in an environmentally sound manner. The Convention covers toxic, poisonous,
explosive, corrosive, flammable, ecotoxic and infectious wastes. (unep.org)
• The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous
Wastes and their Disposal was adopted on 22 March 1989 by the Conference of
Plenipotentiaries in Basel, Switzerland, in response to a public outcry following the
discovery, in the 1980s, in Africa and other parts of the developing world of deposits of
toxic wastes imported from abroad.
OBJECTIVE
The overarching objective of the Basel Convention is to protect human health and the environment
against the adverse effects of hazardous wastes. Its scope of application covers a wide range of wastes
defined as “hazardous wastes” based on their origin and/or composition and their characteristics, as
well as two types of wastes defined as “other wastes” - household waste and incinerator ash.

Aims and provisions

The provisions of the Convention center around the following principal aims:

• the reduction of hazardous waste generation and the promotion of environmentally sound
management of hazardous wastes, wherever the place of disposal;
• the restriction of transboundary movements of hazardous wastes except where it is perceived to be
in accordance with the principles of environmentally sound management; and
• a regulatory system applying to cases where transboundary movements are permissible.
International Convention of the
Regulation of Whaling
The International Whaling Commission was established
under the 1946 International Convention for the Regulation
of Whaling to provide for the proper conservation of whale
stocks and orderly development of the whaling industry.
The International Convention for the
Prevention of Pollution from Ships
(MARPOL)
The major international convention for preventing pollution
of the marine environment by ships from operational or
accidental causes. The Convention comprises laws aimed at
preventing and limiting pollution from ships - both
accidental and routine pollution.
