Architecture can be summarized as follows: Architecture is the art and science of designing and constructing buildings. Some key developments in architecture include the post-and-lintel method, Greek orders of columns, and architectural elements like arches, vaults, and domes which allowed for greater height and space. The Romans made important contributions through the invention of the arch and development of concrete as a building material. Modern architecture saw new materials like glass, iron, and steel emerge alongside organic styles from architects like Gaudi and an increased focus on function over form by pioneers like Frank Lloyd Wright.
