Welcome, Grade 3!

This document provides an overview of the solar system including the 8 planets and their key characteristics. It discusses that the solar system contains inner planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars which are closest to the sun, as well as outer planets Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune which are gas giants. Each planet's traits such as size, rotation period, and distance from the sun are summarized. Memory tools for remembering the order of the planets are also provided.

SOLAR SYSTEM
Our Solar System is made up of eight
planets, their moon, and our sun.
The first four planets are called the inner
planets. They are closest to the sun. their
names are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.
The next four planets are called the outer
planets. Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and
Neptune are called the gas giant because
they are made mostly of gases.

MERCURY
 Mercury is the
nearest planet to
the sun.

 Mercury has no
moon.

 1 day lasts 180

days on earth..
 2ND planet from the sun. VENUS
Brightest planet in the solar
system.

 Venus is known as earth

sister because of it’s similar
size.

 Venus has longer day than

tear.

 It takes 243 days for Venus

to make a rotation, and 224
days to orbit around the sun.
EARTH
(Our Home)
 The Earth
estimated to be 4.5
billion years old.

 The world is not

round. It’s an oblate
spheroid.

 The Earth revolves

around the sun in
365 days.
MARS
 Mars is the 4th closest
planet to the sun. it can be
easily seen from earth.

 Mars orbits the sun every

687 earth days.

 A hundred pound man would

weight 38 pounds on mars.
 Jupiter is the largest
planet in our Solar System. JUPITER
 Jupiter volume is large
enough to contain 1,300
planets the size of earth.

 Jupiter rotates faster than

any other planets in the
solar system. It rotates so
quickly that the days are
only 10 hours long.

 But it takes 12 earth years

to for Jupiter to complete
an orbit around the sun.
 Saturn is the 2nd SATURN
largest planet. It
has 7 thin flat rings
around it.

 It takes about
29.46 earth years
for Saturn to orbit
around our sun.

 Saturn is a giant
ball of gas, but it
does have a solid
inner core.
 Because of the URANUS
strange way it spins,
nights on some parts
of Uranus can last for
more than 40 years.

 Uranus is the coldest

planet in the solar
system.

 It takes 30,685 earth

days for Uranus to
complete an orbit
around the sun.
NEPTUNE
 Neptune is a sea blue of
methane gas.

 Neptune has 14 moons.

 It takes 165 earth years

for Neptune to complete
an orbit around the sun.

 Neptune and Uranus are

called ICE GIANTS.
