Understanding Direct-to-Home (DTH) TV

Direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasting involves transmitting television programs directly from satellites to small dishes installed at subscriber homes. It bypasses local cable operators and allows broadcasters to connect directly with consumers. DTH services were first proposed in India in 1996 but rejected over security concerns. The technology was allowed in 2000, requiring operators to establish earth stations within 12 months. DTH offers better picture quality than cable and can reach remote areas lacking terrestrial TV. The basic DTH network involves an uplink station transmitting to subscribers' dishes and set-top boxes for decoding and viewing channels.

INTRODUCTION
• DTH stands for direct to home
• The reception of satellite programs with a
personal dish at the subscribers home.
• DTH does away with the need for the
local cable operator and puts the
broadcaster directly in touch with
consumer.

3
HISTORY
• 1996 >DTH services were first proposed
in INDIA , but rejected due to concers
over national security.
• 2000> DTH was allowed with new policy
• The operators were required to setup
earth stations in india within 12 monts
with a cost of $2.14 million valid for 10
years.
4
How does DTH differ from
cable tv?
• In DTH, TV channels would be
transmitted from the satellite to a small
dish antenna of the subscriber’s home.
• The broadcaster connects directly to the
user eliminating middlemen like local
cable operators.
• Dth can reach rural and remote areas
easily.
5
Why DTH?
• DTH offers better quality picture than
cable TV. This is because
cable TV in India is analog. Despite
digital transmission and
reception, the cable transmission is still
analog.
• DTH offers
stereophonic sound effects.
6
• It can also reach remote areas where
terrestrial transmission and cable TV
have failed to penetrate.
• Apart from enhanced picture quality,
DTH also allows interactive TV services
such as movie-on-demand, Internet
access, video conferencing and e-mail.

GENERAL BLOCK
DIAGRAM

• Tunner :
it selects a particular channel in the
range from 48 MHz to 860 MHz.
Demodulator
selected channel demodulated and the
signal fed to decoder.
Decoder:
it is the D to A converted, whose output
is audio and video signal.

9
• Microcontoroller:
– It controls all the process performed by each
block.
– Cas system: conditional access system
The channels are encrypted and the viewers
need to buy a set top box to decrypt it.

10
– Working
– The encoder converts the audio, video and
data
signals into the digital format and the
multiplexer mixes these
signals. At the user end, there will be a
small dish antenna and
set-top boxes to decode and view numerous
channels. On the
user's end, receiving dishes can be as small
as 45 cm in
diameter.

Basic DTH network concepts
• Transmission station
• The transmission also known as earth
station is used to uplink the contents.
• TV channels would be transmitted from
the satellite to a small dish antenna
mounted on the window or rooftop of the
subscriber’s home

Basic DTH network concepts
Receive terminal
• Antenna.
• Interface cables.
• Set top box

13
Set top box

• A set top box or set top unit(STU) is a device that connects

to a television and an external source of signal, converting
into content which is then displayed on the television screen

14
The channels
• Satellite TV providers get programming
from two major sources: International
turnaround channels (such as HBO,
ESPN and CNN, STAR TV, SET, B4U
etc) and various local channels (SaBe TV,
Sahara TV, Doordarshan, etc).

15
The channels
• The broadcast center uses large satellite
dishes to pick up these analog and digital
signals from several sources.
