INTRODUCTION:-
 Disposal of waste plastic is a major problem.
 It is non-biodegradable consists of low-density polyethylene.
 Burning of plastic bags causes environmental pollution.
 To find its utility in bituminous mixes for road construction laboratory
studies were conducted on bituminous mixes.
 Improvement in properties of bituminous mix.

WHAT ARE WASTE PLASTIC ROADS?
 R.Vasudevan laid out a process of building roads by recycling plastic waste.
 India has the world’s second largest road network.
 Potholes, a common feature of roads in India.
 Plastic waste roads can prevent potholes.
 In 2015 centre made it mandatory for all road developers in country to use
plastic waste in road construction.

MATERIALS USED:-
 AGGREGATES:-
 Coarse Aggregates- Aggregate of 20mm, 10 mm is used.
 Fine Aggregate- Fine aggregate shall consist of either crushed rock or
combination of natural rock and crushed rock.
 Fine aggregate passing through 2.36 mm sieve and retained on 0.075 mm
sieve is used.

 BITUMEN:-
 Bitumen acts as binding agent for aggregates.
 60/70 or 80/100 penetration grade bitumen of VG-30,VG-10 can be used.

o WASTE PLASTIC MODIFIERS:-


 Modifiers are used to enhance the properties of mix.
 Plastic waste such as carry bags, water bottles, milk packets, glasses, cups
can be used.
 Waste plastic in shredded form is used.

CONSTRUCTION OF PLASTIC ROADS:-
 STEP 1-
 Collection and cleaning of plastic waste.
 Plastic waste is cut into a size between 2.36 mm and 4.75 mm using
shredding machine.

 STEP 2-
 The aggregate mix is heated to 1650C and transferred to mixing chamber.
 Amount of plastic to be added is 8%-12% of bitumen.

 STEP 3-
 Bitumen is to be heated to 1650C to have good binding and to prevent weak
bonding.

 STEP 4:-
 Shredded plastic waste is to be added in the mixing chamber.
 It gets coated uniformly over the aggregate within 30 to 60 seconds.

 STEP 5:-
 The plastic waste coated aggregates are mixed with hot bitumen and
resulted mix is used for road construction.

METHOD OF LAYING PLASTIC ROADS:-
 1) DRY PROCESS:-
 The aggregate is heated to 1650C in the mini hot mix plant.
 Plastic is coated over stones – improving surface property of aggregates.
 Can be practiced in all type of climatic conditions.
 No evolution of toxic gas.
 This process is applicable to plastic waste material only.

 2)WET PROCESS:-
 Waste plastic made into powder is mixed with bitumen.
 Mechanical stirrer is required.
 This process is applicable to recycling plastic, rubber waste.
 Since wet process requires lot of investment not commonly used.

ADVANTAGES OF WASTE PLASTIC BITUMINOUS
MIX:-
 Better resistance towards rain water and water stagnation.
 Reduction in pores in aggregate and hence less rutting.
 No potholes.
 Crushing value was reduced by 40%.
 The load withstanding property increases.
 Disposal of waste plastic will no longer be a problem.
 The cost of road construction is also decreased.
 Municipal solid waste management.

DISADVANTAGES:-

 Toxics present in plastic waste would trigger leaching during the first rain.

 The components of the road once it has been laid are not inert.

 The presence of chlorine will release HCL gas during road laying.

LITERATURE SURVEY REVIEW:-

 Reduce the need of bitumen by 10%.
 The coating of plastics over aggregate also improves the quality of
aggregate.
 Higher Marshall Stability value.

 The waste plastic used is about 5-10% by weight of bitumen.
 This substantially improves the Marshall Stability value, strength, fatigue
life.
 Improves the life span and pavement performance with marginal savings.

CONCLUSION:-
 The plastic model was successful on the major roads of Bangalore.
 The experimentation carried by CRRI (Central road research institute)
indicated higher strength.
 Plastic roads will be boon for India’s hot and humid climate.
 Easiest disposal of plastic waste.
 Eco friendly.
 Good skid resistance and resistant to stripping.
