The Tertiary Sector covers a wide range of activities from commerce to administration, transport,
financial and real estate activities, business and personal services, education, health and social
work. It is made of:
 The market services sector ( trade, transports, financial operations, business services, personal
services, accommodation and food service activities, real estate, information-communication);
 The non-market sector ( public administration, education, human health, social work
activities).
The perimeter of the tertiary sector is therefor defined by complementarity with agriculture and
industrial activities ( the primary and secondary sectors).

Importance of services

 When selling services rather than technology, the focus should be on people and
organizations—listening to and understanding their internal projects, and being
considerate of their timelines and budgets. It is important to listen and provide a fair
offer for services that genuinely meet a customer's need.
Various Service sector in India
 India's services sector covers a wide variety of activities such as trade, hotel and
restaurants, transport, storage and communication, financing, insurance, real estate,
business services, community, social and personal services, and services associated
with construction.
Transportation
 Rail Transport
Railways are the principal mode of transportation for freight and passengers in India.
Railways also make it possible to conduct many activities like business, sightseeing,
and pilgrimage along with transportation of goods over longer distances.
 Road Transport
Road transport provides a faster and less costly means of transporting goods over
short distances. Other modes of transport like water, air or rail may incur delays in
transit of goods with loading and reloading required in multiple locations.
Communications
 Postal Services
They use the services to coordinate with other offices- to send notices, memos, and other
documents. It is useful especially to places that are hard to reach. They event sent packages
and parcels from one post office to another. It is their way of communicating to local offices
and their subordinates in remote areas.
 Telecommunication
In today's digital era, telecom services are critical for business success and continuity. They
not only enable more effective communication but also increase flexibility in the workplace
and allow companies to expand their reach.
Banking & other financial institutions
 supply of institutional credit for agriculture
The institutional credit has been conceived to play a pivotal role in the agricultural
development of India. A large number of institutional agencies are involved in the
disbursement of credit to agriculture. However, the persistence of money lenders in
the rural credit market is still a major concern.
