• United States of America (also referred to as
the United States, the U.S., the USA,
America) is a federal constitutional republic comprising
fifty states and a federal district. The country is situated
mostly in central North America, where its
forty-eight contiguous states and Washington, D.C., the
capital district, lie between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans,
bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south.
The state of Alaska is in the northwest of the continent, with
Canada to the east and Russia to the west across the
Bering Strait. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-
Pacific. The country also possesses several territories in the
Caribbean and Pacific.
• At 3.79 million square miles (9.83 million km2)
and with over 309 million people, the United
States is the third or fourth largest country by
total area, and the third largest both by land area
and population. It is one of the world's most
ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the
product of large-scale
immigration from many countries.[7] The U.S.
economy is the world's largest national economy,
with an estimated 2009 GDP of $14.3 trillion (a
quarter of nominal global GDP and a fifth of
global GDP at purchasing power parity)
• Indigenous peoples of Asian origin have inhabited
what is now the mainland United States for many
thousands of years. This Native American population
was greatly reduced by disease and warfare after
European contact. The United States was founded
by thirteen British colonies located along the
Atlantic seaboard. On July 4, 1776, they issued the
Declaration of Independence, which proclaimed their
right to self-determination and their establishment
of a cooperative union. The rebellious states
defeated the British Empire in the
American Revolution, the first successful
colonial war of independence.
• The current United States Constitution was
adopted on September 17, 1787; its
ratification the following year made the states
part of a single republic with a strong central
government. The Bill of Rights, comprising ten
constitutional amendments guaranteeing
many fundamental civil rights and freedoms,
was ratified in 1791.
Washington, D.C
• Washington, D.C. formally the District of
Columbia and commonly referred to
as Washington, the District, or simply D.C., is
the capital of the United States, founded on
July 16, 1790
• The city is located on the north bank of the
Potomac River and is bordered by the states of
Virginia to the southwest and Maryland to the
other sides. The District has a resident
population of 599,657; because of commuters
from the surrounding suburbs, its population
rises to over one million during the workweek.
The Washington Metropolitan Area, of which
the District is a part, has a population of
5.4 million, the eighth-largest
metropolitan area in the country.
• The architecture of Washington varies greatly. Six of the
top 10 buildings in the American Institute of Architects'
2007 ranking of "America's Favorite Architecture" are
located in the District of Columbia:the White House; the
Washington National Cathedral; the
Thomas Jefferson Memorial; the United States Capitol;
the Lincoln Memorial; and the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The neoclassical, Georgian
, gothic, and modern architectural styles are all reflected
among those six structures and many other prominent
edifices in Washington. Notable exceptions include
buildings constructed in the French Second Empire style
such as the Old Executive Office Building
• The Washington Metropolitan Area, which
includes the surrounding counties in Maryland
and Virginia, is the ninth-largest in the United
States with more than five million residents.
When combined with Baltimore and its
suburbs, the Baltimore-Washington
Metropolitan Area has a population exceeding
eight million residents, the fourth-largest in
the country.
NEW YORK
• New York is a state in the Northeastern region of
the United States. It is the nation's
third most populous state. New York is bordered
by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and
by Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont to
the east. The state has a maritime border with
Rhode Island east of Long Island, as well as an
international border with the Canadian provinces
of Ontario to the north and west, and Quebec to
the north. New York is often referred to as New
York State to distinguish it from New York City.
• The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to
the United States to mark the Centennial of
the American Declaration of Independence.
The idea of giving a colossal representation of
republican virtues to a "sister" republic, across
the sea, served as a focus for the republican
cause against other politicians. The Statue of
Liberty was dedicated in New York Harbor on
October 28, 1886.
• New York covers 49,576 square miles (128,400
km2) and ranks as the 27th largest state by
size.[13]The Great Appalachian Valley
dominates eastern New York, while
Lake Champlain is the chief northern feature
of the valley, which also includes the
Hudson River flowing southward to the
Atlantic Ocean. The rugged
Adirondack Mountains, with vast tracts of
wilderness, lie west of the valley.
• The Montauk Point State Park boasts the
1797 Montauk Lighthouse, commissioned
under President George Washington, which is
a major tourist attraction on the easternmost
tip of Long Island. Hither Hills park offers
camping and is a popular destination with
surfcasting sport fishermen.
• There are 62 cities in New York. The largest
city in the state and the most populous city in
the United States is New York City, which
comprises five counties, the Bronx, New York
(Manhattan), Queens, Kings (Brooklyn), and
Richmond (Staten Island). New York City is
home to more than two-fifths of the state's
population.
