Fill in the blank

 1) All plants and animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.
 2) Sunlight is the basic requirement of plants for photosynthesis.
 3) Herbivores get their energy directly from plants.
 4) Human activity is a major factor in disturbing the balance in nature.
 5) Deforestation disturbs the food chain in nature.
Differentiate between the following

 1) Herbivores and Omnivores

 Ans. Herbivores are animals that eat only plants. Example – Deer, cow
 Omnivores are animals that feed on both plants and animals. Example – Bear,
 Dogs.
 2) Scavengers and Decomposers
 Ans. Scavengers are animals that eat dead bodies of other animals. Example –
 Hyenas, Vultures.
 Decomposers are living things that help in the decay of the remains of dead
plants
 and plant waste. Example – Bacteria, Fungi.
Give one word for the following

 1) Animals that mainly eat dead bodies of other animals – Scavengers.

 2) Things around us that affect our life on the earth – Environment.
 3) Excessive cutting down of trees and uncontrolled clearing of forests –
Deforestation.
 4) Living things such as bacteria and fungi that helps in the decay of the
remains of dead
 animals and plant waste – Decomposers.
Answer the following questions

 Ans. The living component of the environment are – Plants, Animals and
 Microorganisms
 The non – living component of the environment are – Air, Water, Sunlight, Minerals,
 Rocks.
 2) Describe the dependency of plants and animals on soil.
 Ans. Plants – a) plants need soil to grow.
 b) Soil holds plants firmly.
 c) Roots of plants absorb minerals and water from the soil.
 Animals – a) There are many animals that make burrow in the soil and use them
 as homes.

 b) Many other microorganisms also live in the soil.

 3) How do animals depend on plants?

 Ans. Animals depend on plants for many factors like –
 a) Food
 b) Oxygen
 c) Shelter

 4) What is a food chain? Give an example
