 A drug may be administered by


mouth (orally) or through the skin
(parenterally). Parenteral methods
include: injection into a vein
(intravenously); into a muscle
(intramuscularly); under the skin
(subcutaneously).
Administering injection
 The injection techniques based on the sites of
injection are:
Subcutaneous (SC): injection into tissues just
below the dermis of the skin/hypodermic
Intramuscular (IM): injection into muscle body
Intravenous (IV): injection into a vein
Intradermal (ID): injection into the dermis just
under the epidermis

PROCEDURE OF IM AND SC INJECTION
IN THE ADULTS
1. Ascertain that the prescription is correct
2. Gain informed consent
3. Wash hands
4. Prepare needed equipment and supplies:
vial/ampoule, disposable syringe, hand gloves,
cotton balls, alcohol or solvent (e.g. normal saline or
sterile water) and sterile swab,
5. Give explanation about the injection process and
the cautionary expression
6. Tap the top of the ampoule to ensure all of the
solution is in the ampoule
7. Draw up the required amount of solution

8. Take the plunger of the syringe back, invert
the syringe and examine it for air
9. Tap the syringe gently to let the air up to the
top of the syringe, push the plunger to
exclude the air from the syringe and needle
10. Expose the site of injection
11. Apply the hand glove
12. Inject at the correct site and angle
13. Remove the needle smoothly and press
the injection site gently with the cotton ball
14. Dispose of the equipment correctly
