Sudama: The True Devotee of Krishna

Sudama was Lord Krishna's childhood friend and classmate. They had both studied at the Sandipani Ashram in Ujjain together. Sudama came from an impoverished Brahmin family while Krishna was a king, but they shared a strong bond of true friendship. The famous tale tells of how Sudama humbly visited Krishna with only beaten rice as a gift, and was astonished upon returning home to find that Krishna had gifted him a palace in reciprocation of his pure devotion and friendship. Sudama is remembered as an example of a true devotee who lived simply and without desires for material gains.
