RATIONALE OF THE PROJECT
Hunger and poverty are two prime examples of what is described as “structural violence,”
that is, physical and psychological harm that results from exploitive and unjust social,
political and economic systems. It is hard to imagine a genuine peace that did not overcome
our current global pattern of extensive poverty in the midst of plenty.
It is important that we address this and find a solution that is long term, rather than
conducting feeding programs and donation drives which are short-term aid and are not
sustainable.
Through practicing urban container gardening, the beneficiaries will be able to get sustainable
yet nutritious food accessible within their homes. It is also a solution to increase food security.
Hunger poses dangerous health consequences for the
Philippines, with 20.6 percent of people being underweight
THE PROBLEM and 32.2 percent being stunted. Low weight and stunting
can restrict growth and prevent people from developing
fully.
One of the main causes of hunger worldwide is poverty.
Millions of people around the world are simply too poor to
be able to buy nutritious food. When people are
undernourished, they tend to be weak and unhealthy. If
hunger makes it hard to grow and learn, it's no surprise
when these people can't rise up to break the cycle of poverty
and hunger.
Hunger falls under structural violence as people affected by
this are at risk of developing impulse control issues (e.g.
hoarding of food supply, stealing and hurting due to
desperation).
THE PROBLEM
Harmony with others is the peace challenge being
identified. Since hunger can lead to survival skills,
some people will find a job to feed themselves. Sadly,
not everyone has this kind of mindset. Some people
who experience hunger will lead to their kind of
survival which is to steal or rob other people who are
doing their best to feed themselves. Hunger is and can
cause structural violence which means it can harm
people by preventing them from meeting their basic
needs
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
This project aims to:
Introduce people into Urban Gardening
Make a sustainable solution for lack of nutrition and hunger
BENEFICIARIES
Everyone, especially those who suffer from poverty, will benefit from this project as this
provides information to combat hunger in every household. With this information, they
will utilize this in their everyday needs.
This project will also help everyone to have a nutritious meal since most of the plants that
will be introduced are vegetables.
Once they learn Urban Container Gardening (UCG), they are able to provide food for
themselves.
Harmony with Others is the concept
applied to address the problem of
PEACE CONCEPTS Hunger. In this concept, we are called
APPLIED to love others as neighbors and not to
treat others as competitors. The poor is
embraced justly as an integral part of
the community.
Another peace concept applied is the
Harmony with Nature. In this concept,
we are invited to keep in touch with
nature for the improvement of our
well-being through the promotion of
UCG.
Action Plan
Since electronic gadgets are accessible nowadays regardless of social class, we will use
social media such as Facebook. Through Facebook, we can reach as many people in
many age ranges.
Steps:
1. Post about our advocacy.
2. What is Urban Container Gardening and its relevance?
3. Guide to Urban Container Gardening in the Philippines
4. How to utilize space for Urban Container Gardening in your home
5. Ideal plants for UCG in the Philippines
6. Tips
7. Show your UCG Submission
Ethical Concerns
to be addressed There are no changes that will
negatively incorporate the behavior of
the people/target audience. It doesn't
affect the environment since it only
needs small or large space in a
household. And there are no wastes
thrown in the environment.
Resources
Social Media: Facebook
Post materials will be made through Canva
Monitoring and Evaluation Plan
To evaluate the success of this project, our group will survey on the effectiveness of
the project (e.g. sample post does/doesn't capture the attention of audience). To
acquire the status of our project, we will monitor the progress of our posts such as
how many views, comments posted, and the number of shares.
Sustainability Plan
The project will be sustained through continuous efforts in gardening
projects so that people in need won’t depend on feeding programs and
donation drives.
Other Concerns - Bad weather may affect the gardening
because plant’s growth depends on different
weather conditions.
- Not all people in need have substantial land
for gardening.
- Locations with low light condition can
influence a plant's growth (e.g. String beans
can't grow well in places with inadequate
presence of sunlight. Crop appears to be thin)
