Azimuth Star by Abc

This document provides instructions on how to find the azimuth of a star using the ABC method. It gives the steps to determine the latitude, declination, local hour angle (LHA) of the star. It then works through an example problem, showing the calculations to find the true azimuth and compass error of the star Gacrux given the date, time, location and observed bearing. The example determines relevant information from the Nautical Almanac like GHA of Aries and the star's declination and SHA. It then calculates LHA, the ABC values, and true azimuth to find the compass error.

Finding Azimuth
of Star by means
of ABC method
IN FINDING AZIMUTH OF A
STAR BY MEANS OF ABC
METHOD, WE NEED TO
DETERMINE THREE
FACTORS:
1. LATITUDE
2. DECLINATION
3. LHA
STEPS IN FINDING AZIMUTH
OF A STAR BY MEANS OF
ABC METHOD
1. Convert LMT to GMT, using
GMT and DATE of observation,
enter the Nautical Almanac and
record tabulated hourly value of
GHA of Aries
2. On the same daily
page find the SHA and
DEC. of a given star and
enter them in your format.
Since, there is no "d"
correction, the DEC is
entered.
3. Turn to the Increments and
Correction Table and find the
minute page. Then under the
Aries column find the increase
in the GHA of Aries. Always add
the GHA and "m & s "tabulated
value together to get the total of
GHA of Aries
4. After getting the total
GHA of Aries, add the SHA
of a given star to get the
value of GHA of a star, if the
value of GHA star is more
than 360°, subtract 360 and
the remaining will be the
GHA of a star
5. The declination of the
star at the time of sight
will remain without
correction so the
declination of the star will
be as it is.
6. Upon determining the
GHA of star, calculate LHA
with these formula:
LHA = GHAs + EAST LONGITUDE
LHA = GHAs - WEST LONGITUDE

LHA is West if it is between 000-180

LHA is East if it is between 180-360
Upon determining the
three factors, calculate
the azimuth of a star
by ABC table, or by
using ABC formula as
follows:
Cot Zn = C x cos Latitude
For the Quadrantal
notation Rule:
N E value is same
S E value subtract 180°
S W value add 180°
N W value subtract 360°

LHA = GHA + EAST LONGITUDE

LHA = 234° 55.1 + 175° 45’ (E)
LHA = 410° 40.1’
- 360
LHA = 50° 40.1’ W
LHA is West if it is between 000-180
LHA is East if it is between 180-360

175° 45’ E at LMT 0325, the star Gacrux was sighted bearing
206°. Find T/Zn and Compass Error.

LATITUDE = 25° 40’ N

DECLINATION = 57° 13.5’ S
LHA = 50° 40.1’ W
A = Tan LATITUDE ÷ Tan LHA
= Tan 25° 40’ ÷ Tan 50° 40.1’
A = 0.39 S
B = Tan Declination ÷ Sin LHA
= Tan 57° 13.5’ ÷ Sin 50° 40.1’
B = 2.00 S
Same sign ADD
Different sign SUBTRACT

A = 0.39 S

B = 2.00 S
C = 2.39 S
Cot Zn = C x cos Latitude
Cot Zn = 2.39 x Cos 25° 40’
= 2.154176696
1 ÷ Ans = SHIFT tan Ans =
S 24.9° W
180 + 24.9°
T/Zn = 204.9° - 206° (
Star’s bearing)

Compass Error = 1.1° W
