Sound Devices

Onomatopoeia is when a word’s


pronunciation imitates its sound.
Example: 
I could hear the crowd murmur as the news
spread. 
The buzzing bee flew away.
The sack fell into the river with a splash.
The books fell on the table with a loud
thump.
He looked at the roaring sky.
The rustling leaves kept me awake.
Similarly, words like growl, giggle, grunt,
murmur, blurt, chatter etc. denote
different kinds of human voice sounds.
We can identify a group of words related to
different sounds of wind, such as; swish,
swoosh, whiff, whoosh, whizz, whisper
etc.
Sounds of animals like Meow, Moo, Neigh,
Tweet, Oink, Baa
Alliteration happens when words that start
with the same sound are used close
together in a phrase or sentence. The sound
is usually a consonant and the words don’t
have to always be right next to one another.
One of the fun features of alliteration is
when it becomes a tongue twister.
Example: 
She could feel her son’s sweet smell of
success.
But a better butter makes a
batter better.
A big bully beats a baby boy.
Becky’s beagle barked and
bayed, becoming bothersome
for Billy.
Carrie's cat clawed her couch,
creating chaos.
-Assonance takes place when
two or more words close to one
another repeat the same vowel
sound but start with different
consonant sounds.

Example:
The silken tent.
If I bleat when I speak it's because I just
got . . . fleeced."
It beats . . . as it sweeps . . . as it cleans!" -
slogan for Hoover vacuum cleaners“
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
I lie down by the side of my bride.
Hear the lark and harken to the barking of
the dark fox gone to ground.
Try to light the fire.
Those clucking chickens are driving me
crazy!
The prisoner was terrified to hear
the crack of the whip.
