Licchavi Princess Bhrikuti

Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal played a key role in spreading Buddhism from Nepal to Tibet in the 7th century. As the first wife of Songtsen Gampo, the earliest emperor of Tibet, she brought sacred Buddhist statues and skilled artisans from Nepal as part of her dowry. She and Songtsen Gampo's Chinese wife, Princess Wencheng, worked together to establish temples and spread Buddhism in Tibet, strengthening relations between Tibet, Nepal, and China.

Who was Bhrikuti?
The history of Bhrikuti is not certain and no reference to her has been found among the
documents, discovered at Dunuhuang ,there are increasing indications supporting this
hypothesis. Bhrikuti was a devout Buddhist. The Licchavi princess Bhrikuti is known as
Tibetans as Royal Lady too .She is traditionally considered to have been the first wife and
queen of the earliest emperor of Tibet, Songtsen Gampo. She was also known as Besa and
was a princess of the Lichavi kingdom ofNepal and later the queen of Tibet.

She was the daughter of Amshuverma, the coruler of Shivadev I during Licchavi period. .She
was married when she was 16 years old. History shows her interest on artichecture and arts
too. She brought many sacred images and expert Newari craftsmen with her as part of her
dowry. She wanted many palaces statuates to be made. Bhrikuti is usually represented as 
Hareta tara and the next wife of Songsten Gampo ,chinese princess Wencheng was
considered to be Shweta tara. Bhrikuti and Wencheng are said to have worked together to
establish temples and Buddhism in Tibet . She changed the course of Himalayan history by
introducing Buddhism from Nepal. The sclupters of Bhrikuti can be seen on tibet and Bhutan
too.
What was Bhrikutis cotributions towards the extension of
China Tibet relationship?
Princess Bhrikuti brought great Buddhist change in the land of Tibet . During her marriage she
brought brought Buddha statues of Shakyamuni Buddha statues which was the inspiration
of Tibetean buddha scluptures in Tibet as a part of dowry. one of the wonder of Tibetan
Buddhism is consists of many parts i.e. White palace,Red palace etc. It is said that Red Palace
was built and constructed by Newar craftsmen under the wish of Princess Bhrikuti. Her
contibutions of development of many arts designs enhanced her prestige as the princess of
nepal in tibet which also helped in flourishment of relation of China and Tibet with Nepal.

The contracted matrimonial alliance of Bhrikuti with Tibet, By Amshuverma played a huge role in
extension of relation with Tibet . Wheras the next wife of Songsten Gampo got married with
chinese princess Wencheng.Both of them Bhrikuti and Wencheng worked together to establish
temples and buddhism in Tibet that also created impact on china through Wencheng of Nepal
by Bhrikuti. The Red palace ,statue of Chenresing alsocallled Mikyo Dorje housed on Romoche
temple,  has been sacked at least two times - first during the lMongol invasions and later it was
gutted in the 1960s. It is said that the lower half of the statue was found in a Lhasa rubbish
dump and the upper part found in China,Beijing.

To sum up everything that has been stated so far,the matrimonial relationship of bhrikuti with
tibetean king Songsten Gampo played the huge role in extension of relation with china and the
another matrimonial relation with Chinese princess Wencheng ofSongsten extended relation of
