Lace
• Lace is a delicate fabric made of yarn or thread in an open
web-like pattern, made by machine or by hand, came into
existence around the late 15th century
• There are two basic types of handmade lace: needle lace,
bobbin lace
• Different uses: trims, curtains, table cloths, and outfits
The market town Honiton
• a parish to the east of Devonshire, England
• the market town of Honiton is Devon’s main lace center
• having a history of textile production prior to lace making.
Honiton lace
• In the 16th century, Italian art of making lace spread to Honiton
• Devon’s workers are experienced in cloth production
• Good access to the materials needed for lace: wool, flax
• Devon’s lace took the name of the dominant town and became
known by the generic name “Honiton”
• In 19th century, lace making industry declined because of the
invention of net making machine
Made with bobbins and very fine thread
Built up from individually worked segments
Inspired by Devon countryside
complex patterns with natural objects
(leaves, flowers, animals…)
Considered as the “real beauty” and “true art object”
Honiton lace was an extravagant commodity,
“made by the poorest, bought by the most wealthy”.
• The aristocrats’ and the wealthy’s eagerness for Honiton lace;
• The lacemakers’ poverty.
In the 19th century, the lace industry had declined but it was revived
under Queen Victoria’s reign.
• Queen Victoria wore ceremonial dresses using Honiton lace
in several formal occasions;
• Other royals promoting the lace: Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary.
