COMPUTER HARDWARE SYSTEM
DEFINITION
Computer hardware refers to the physical components that make
01
up a computer system. There are many different kinds of hardware that
can be installed inside, and
02
INPUT DEVICES − keyboard, mouse, etc.
03
OUTPUT DEVICES − printer, monitor, etc.
SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICES − Hard disk, CD,
04 DVD, etc.
INTERNAL COMPONENTS − CPU, motherboard, RAM,
etc.
MOTHERBOARD
01
02
03
04 The motherboard acts as a brain; allocating
power where it’s needed, communicating with and
coordinating across all other components – making it
one of the most important pieces of hardware in a
computer.
CPU (Central Processing/Processor Unit)
01
02
03
04 The CPU (Central Processing Unit or
processor) is responsible for processing all
information from programs run by your computer.
RAM
01
02
03
Random Access Memory, or RAM, is
04 hardware found in the memory slots of the
motherboard. The role of RAM is to temporarily
store on-the-fly information created by programs and
to do so in a way that makes this data immediately
accessible.
HARD DRIVE
01
02
03
04 The hard drive is a storage device responsible
for storing permanent and temporary data. Hard disk
drives work by writing binary data onto spinning
magnetic disks called platters that rotate at high
speeds, while a solid-state drive stores data by using
static flash memory chips.
Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)
01
02
03
04 Especially important for 3D rendering, the GPU
does exactly what its name suggests and processes
huge batches of graphic data. You will find that your
computer’s graphics card has at least one GPU.
Power Supply Unit (PSU)
01
02
03
04 It is the point where power enters your system
from an external power source and is then allocated by
the motherboard to individual component hardware.
Not all power supplies are made equally however, and
without the right wattage PSU your system will fail to
work.

Dell XPS
The XPS (Xtreme Performance
01 System) name dates back to 1990 when Dell
was more focused on corporate business than
02 consumers. Gateway was number one in the
high-end consumer market.
03 The first generation of the XPS system
was available as either a desktop or a tower
04 case. This new product line was so far ahead of
the competition that it was featured on the
cover of the October 1993 issue
of PC/Computing.

04
The XPS Desktop Special Edition (starts at $931; $2,185 as tested) is a
compact mid-tower desktop with ample creative and gaming power thanks to
our tester’s Intel K-series processor and Nvidia's GeForce RTX
3070 graphics.
