separating mixtures which uses
filtering and sieving; and use the
technique in everyday life.
Are you now ready for our
new lesson this afternoon?
That’s great! (PAUSE) But
before that, we will have to

No.7.) is S for sielving.
No. 8 is F for Filtering.
No. 9 is still
F for filtering and No. 10
is F again for Filtering
Kindly raise your hand to those who
got a score of 5 and above.
Excellent! you are all great, but as
mentioned earlier that activity aims
to check what you already know
about our lesson for today, we must
explore and
learn more about separating
MIXTURES.
This time, let us go back to our
module and open it on page 3,
(PAUSE)
In building houses and other
structures, we often see workers used
framed wire screen to separate
stones from sand before it is mixed
with cement.
They want the sand to be as fine as
possible before they mix it with the
cement. This will result to a better
cement mixture resulting
to stronger walls, flooring, and
foundation of any building.
On the other hand, carpenters love to
sip coffee early in the morning before
starting to work. They usually brew
coffee and use cloth to filter the
insoluble ground coffee from the
liquid. These two processes of
separating mixtures involve filtering
and sieving.
Alright, at this point, we are
going to have a short activity. You
are going to identify the
technique of separating mixtures.
I am going to show pictures and
Kindly write P for picking; W
for winnowing; and S for
sedimentation.
Again, use a separate sheet for
your answer. First item, candies
of different flavor. Number 2.
rice husks from grains Number
3. silt from water Number 4.
different books on the table –
Last item, number 5 flour from
water.
Let’s check your work. Number
one, how are you going to
separate candies of different
flavors? Correct, by picking,
letter P. Next item, number 2.
How about rice husks from
grains?
Correct, by winnowing, letter W.
For number 3, separating silt
from water, it is through
sedimentation, letter S. Number
4, the different books in the table
can be separated through, yes
letter P, picking. And for the last
item, number 5 letter S for
sedimentation.
Congratulations to all of you for
completing our activity. Moving
forward, separating technique
of insoluble solid from a liquid is
done with the use of a cloth or filter
paper. A common example that uses
cloth or filter paper is when brewing
coffee in the morning.
When separating two solid
materials where one particle is
fine and the other is coarse, one
uses a strainer. Here are the other
techniques of separating
mixtures that involve the
following: The first one is what
we call Filtering.
Solid and liquid components can
be separated with the use of
filter paper or filter cloth as a
medium in which liquid passes
through a filter paper leaving
insoluble solid material in the
medium.
An example for this is when you are
cooking pasta, macaroni for example.
Using a filter, the cooked pasta is left
while letting the hot water
go through the filter. In this
separating method, two phases of
matter are involved. What are those?
Yes, correct, solid and liquid.
On the other hand, we have
sieving wherein it is a method in
which two or more components
of different sizes are separated
from a mixture on the basis of the
difference in their sizes which
uses a sieve.
At this point, on your notebook, from the
short information that you have read,
answer the following questions. I will only
give you 20 seconds to answer each. First
question, What is filtering? Time is up,
the answer is, it is a separating mixture
technique with the use of a filter in which
liquid passes through a filter leaving
insoluble solid in the medium.
Question number 2,
what is sieving? Time is up, sieving is a
method in which two or more components
of different sizes are separated from a
mixture on the basis of the difference on
their sizes. Question number 3, What
material remains in the filter cloth or
paper when filtering is used to separate
mixtures?
Time is up the answer is solid
material. Number 4, What material
passes through a hole of a strainer
when sieving is used to separate
mixtures? Time is up the correct
answer is finer or smaller material.
Last question, What is the difference
between sieving from filtering?
Time is up, the answer is, sieving
is a method of separating solid
mixtures of different sizes
using a sieve while filtering is a
method of insoluble mixture from
a liquid using a filter cloth or
filter paper.
Let us have another activity, open
your modules on page 5. On a
separate sheet of paper,
Write Sieving or Filtering in
identifying the appropriate
technique of separating mixtures.
1. flour from small pebbles –
2. mongo from baby powder –
3. milk from grated coconut –
4. dried tea leaves
from hot water –
5. sand from water
6. water from the faucet
7. seeds from flour
8. stones from water
9. gasoline from marbles
-
10. grind rice from pebbles
-
At this point, I will be giving a
particular situation wherein you
are going to explain your answer.
Do this on your notebook. 30
seconds will be given for you to
answer. Understood? Alright, lets

start.
Number one, Kyle wanted to
bake a cake for the birthday of
his cousin. He found out that
the flour he will be using was
mixed up with some dried seeds.
What technique will he use and
why? Start answering. Time is
up, the answer is sieving.
Why? Because flour which is finer than the
seeds will pass through the tiny holes leaving
the seeds in the sieve. Second situation, are
you ready? Here it is. What type of mixture
will you form when you put dried tea leaves
in hot water and then put some ice cubes and
sugar on it? What separating technique did
you use to extract dried tea leaves from hot
water? Explain why you used such technique.
Start answering.
Time is up, the answer is iced tea.
Filtering was used because dried
tea leaves are insoluble and only
hot water will pass through a
filter paper leaving the dried tea
leaves on it.
We have a lot more activities and
exercises for this module but, we
don’t have enough time to do it,
therefore, it is your task to continue
answering the remaining parts and
exercises in this module, to further
develop your mastery on our lesson
for today you will begin on page 6-7.
This is your assessment and
you are going to answer
questions 1 to 10. Very
important reminder, read the
directions carefully and use a
separate sheet of paper upon
answering.
For your additional activity for this
week, turn your module to page 8.
Complete the activity and write it on
your science notebook or journal.
If you encounter any difficulty in
answering the tasks in
this module, do not hesitate to
consult your teacher.
that you are not alone. We hope
that through this material, you
will
experience meaningful learning
and deep understanding of the
relevant
competencies and lessons. You
can do it!
Looking forward for our next
lesson on Science 6.
Learners,study hard. Do Good
and the Good Life will Follow.
God bless!
Till next time, teacher Cristopher
