Soil as a Three-Phase System Analysis

Soil can be modeled as a three phase system consisting of solid particles, water, and air. The document provides examples to calculate properties of soils such as dry unit weight, saturated unit weight, porosity, degree of saturation, based on given parameters like moisture content, dry weight, saturated weight, specific gravity, and porosity. Formulas for weight-volume relationships are explained to solve these calculation problems.

Va = Volume of air
Vv = Va+Vw = Volume of voids
W = Total weight of soil
Ws = Weight of soil solids
Wa = Weight of air ≈ 0
Ww = Weight of water

PROBLEM 3.11
A saturated clay soil has a moisture content of 40%. Given that Gs = 2.78,
CALCULATE:
a) Dry unit weight
b) Saturated unit weight
c) Porosity
PROBLEM 3.18
A soil specimen is 38mm in diameter and 76mm long and in its natural condition weighs 168.0
gm. When dried completely in an oven the specimen weighs 130.5 gm. The value of Gs is 2.73.
CALCULATE
a) Degree of saturation of specimen
PROBLEM 3.23
A sand sample has porosity of 28% and Gs=2.67
COMPUTE:
a) Dry unit weight
b) Unit weight of sand if degree of saturation = 60%
c) Unit weight of saturated sand
d) Submerged unit weight of sand
