CE configuration Circuit diagram
• In this configuration input is applied between base and
emitter and output is taken from collector and emitter.
• Common emitter npn transistor and common base pnp
transistor as shown in below figure.
Common Emitter (CE) configuration-
Input Characteristics (or) Driving Point(or)
Forward transistor characteristics
• The complete behavior of a transistor can be
described by stating the inter-relation of the
various currents and voltages.
• Input Characteristics: An input current (IB) is a
function of an input voltage (VBE) for various
values of output voltage(VCE)
• Input characteristics are also referred as base
(or) static characteristics.

Contd..
• When VCE=0V emitter-base junction is forward
biased so the input characteristic is similar to
the forward biased diode characteristics.
• When VCE is increased the width of the
depletion region at the reverse biased
collector-base junction increases then
effective base width reduces Weff so base
current IB decreases.
Contd..
• Hence to get the same value of IB as that for
VCE=0v , VBE should be increased.
• So the curve shifts to the right as VCE
increases
Common Emitter(CE) configuration-
output Characteristics (or) Reverse
transistor characteristics
• Output Characteristics: An output current (IC) is
a function of an output voltage(VCE) for various
values of input base current (IB)
• Output characteristics are also referred as
collector (or) static characteristics in CE
configuration

Important points to remember
In CE configuration, a positive input produces a negative
output and hence input and output are out of phase. So,
there is 1800 phase reversal between input and output
in a CE amplifier.
