INTRODUCTION OVERVIEW
• IELTS results are recognized by more than 9,000
organizations, including educational institutions,
employers, professional associations and governments,
in 135 countries around the world.
• More than 3.2 million people from all walks of life
took the test in 2019.
• IELTS is fair and unbiased for any candidate
regardless of nationality, background, gender, lifestyle
or location.

• You can take IELTS Academic or IELTS General
Training, depending on the organization you are
applying to and your plans for the future.
• IELTS is the only Secure English Language Test
approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for
visa customers applying both outside and inside the
UK.

IELTS Academic:
• If you aspire to study in universities or higher
educational institutes, or would like to practice your
profession in an English speaking environment, the
IELTS Academic test is for you.
• It reflects some of the features of academic language
and assesses whether you are ready to begin studying,
training, or work as a professional.

IELTS General Training:
• Candidates, who are planning to going to English
speaking countries for secondary education, work
experience or training programs, require to appear the
IELTS General Training test.
• Further, it is also a requirement for migration to
Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test
focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and
workplace contexts.

IELTS LISTENING TEST
• The IELTS Listening test will take about 30 minutes, and you
will have an extra 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the
answer sheet.
• The Listening test is the same for both IELTS Academic and
IELTS General Training modules.
• You will listen to four recorded texts, monologues and
conversations by a range of native speakers, and write their
answers to a series of questions.

IELTS LISTENING TEST
• These include questions which test the ability to
understand main ideas and detailed factual
information, ability to understand the opinions and
attitudes of speakers, ability to understand the purpose
of what is said and ability to follow the development
of ideas.

LISTENING TEST SECTIONS
• Section 1: A conversation between two people set in
an everyday social context, e.g. a conversation in an
accommodation agency.
• Section 2: A monologue set in an everyday social
context, e.g. a speech about local facilities.

• Section 3: A conversation between up to four people
set in an educational or training context, e.g. a
university tutor and a student discussing an
assignment.
• Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a

IELTS READING TEST
• The IELTS Reading test will take about 60 minutes.
• It consists of 40 questions.
• A variety of question types is used in order to test a
wide range of reading skills.

• These include reading for gist, reading for main ideas,
reading for detail, skimming, recognizing writers’
opinions, attitudes and purpose, and understanding
logical argument.
• The reading test for Academic and General Training
are different in terms of difficulty and band scoring.

IELTS READING TEST TYPES
1. The IELTS Academic Reading test includes three long
texts which range from the descriptive and factual to the
discursive and analytical. The texts are authentic and are
taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers.
These have been selected for a non-specialist audience but
are recognizably appropriate for anyone entering
undergraduate or postgraduate courses or seeking
professional registration.

IELTS READING TEST TYPES
2. The IELTS General Training Reading test includes three
passages with tasks. It requires you to read extracts from
books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements,
company handbooks and guidelines. These are materials you
are likely to encounter on a daily basis in an English
speaking environment.

IELTS WRITING TEST
• The IELTS Writing Test lasts for 60 minutes, and you
will need to complete two writing tasks, Task 1 (20
mins) and Task 2 (40 mins) each of which requires
different text types (description, report, discussion,
argument, and opinion text).

IELTS Writing Task 1 - Academic
• In the first part, you are given a task based on some
graphic, flow chart, map, instructions or pictorial
information.
• You are expected to write an academic descriptive
report of at least 150 words on the information
provided.

IELTS Writing Task 2 - Academic
• The second task is more demanding. You are expected
to produce a written argument in the form of an essay
of at least 250 words on a given topic and to organize
your answer clearly, given some examples to support
your points.

IELTS General Writing
• If you are planning to take the GT module, the Writing
test is different.
• You are allowed one hour to complete two tasks, of
150 and 250 words, as in the Academic module.
• However, Task 1 is always a letter, while Task 2 is an
essay based on a given topic.

IELTS Speaking Test
• The speaking component assesses your use of spoken
English. Every test is recorded.
• The IELTS Speaking Test lasts for 11-14 minutes, and
you will need to complete three speaking parts.

IELTS Speaking Test Parts
Part 1 - the examiner will ask you general questions about
yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as home,
family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts
between four and five minutes.

IELTS Speaking Test Parts
Part 2 - you will be given a topic card which asks you to
talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to
prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The
examiner will then ask one or two questions on the same
topic.

Part 3 - you will be asked further questions about the
topic in Part 2. These will give you the opportunity to
discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the
test lasts between four and five minutes.
