• Define a concept paper as extended definition
• Determine the ways a writer can elucidate on a concept by definition,
explication and clarification (CS_EN11/12A-EAPP-Ig-j-20 )
Concept Paper
is an in-depth analysis of any idea, situation, or
practice.
It can be anything significant:
feeling (What is self esteem?);
term in a certain field like Agriculture
(What is composting?)
term in Automotive (What is soldering rod?) .

1 Definition
It is the method of identifying a given
term and making its meaning clearer.
Presented in Three Ways:

1 A. Informal Definition
is done through
explanation.
a parenthetical or brief
Example: Tocopherol (Vitamin E) is naturally found in
vegetable oil, fish, and nuts.

B. Formal Definition
i. Explains by incorporating the term to be defined (species)
ii. the general category of the term (genus), and
iii. the quality that makes the term different from other terms in the
same category (differentia).
Example: Vitamin E is a light yellow fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an anti-
oxidant.

C. Extended Definition
is a detailed way of defining a term and is usually
composed of at least one (1) paragraph.
Example: formal and informal definition, comparison and
contrast, narration, description, classification
EXTENDED DEFINITION
Can also be expressed through these
1 RHETORICAL STRATEGIES:
a. give its TECHNICAL or POPULAR definition
b. comparing and contrasting it to the related terms
c. analyzing the concept’s components & implications;
d. describing its parts and function, uses, and other details;
e. presenting illustrative cases and examples,
f. tracing the etymology of the term and the concept’s
evolution.

Explication
is a method of explanation in which
sentences, verses, quotes, or passages are
taken from a literary or academic work
and then interpreted and explained in a
detailed way.
