Real-Life Solubility and Temperature Effects

The document discusses solubility in real-life contexts through several examples: 1) Temperature and pressure can affect solubility - increasing temperature makes it easier for substances like sugar to dissolve in water, and increasing pressure allows more carbon dioxide to dissolve in soda. 2) Solubility is used in food preparation when making drinks like iced tea, using a sugar solution instead of sugar cubes. 3) Medications use solubility to infuse active ingredients into liquid carriers that can be absorbed by the body, like cough syrup dissolving additives in sugar water. 4) Divers experience increased solubility of gases in their bodies under higher water pressures, and must ascend slowly to avoid decompression sickness

SOLUBILITY IN

REAL LIFE

By Aldrifa Farizki
Quick recap Main components of a solution
is solvent (major part) and
solvent (minor part).

Solubility is the ability for the

solute to mix with the solvent.

Solubility can be affected by

Temperature and Pressure
Temperature affecting
solubility
• When making powdered milk such as, Milo, we use
warm to hot water to speed up the process. The same
process is used when mixing sugar or coffee.
how do they use
sugar for iced tea

• Because iced tea requires the

temperature to be cold.
Restaurants and café
sometimes use liquid sugar
solution, as the tea easily
absorbs the liquid sugar
solution rather than normal
sugar cubes.
Solubility dependent
on pressure

• Coca cola, and other carbonated beverages

• Carbon dioxide is forced into the liquid causing

it to be more soluble. Once the can is opened
the pressure decreases causing the carbon
dioxide in the liquid to escape.
When If the pressure outside of the can is
higher or the same inside of the can,
pressure is the carbon dioxide doesn’t fizz out like
the same normally. As it maintains the pressure
so the carbon dioxide doesn’t fizz out.

Other
solubilities
• Solubility are found in other places
than beverages or cooking.
• Solubility are also found in
medication. An example is cough
syrup. Chemists infuse ingredients
such as codeine or menthol into a
sugar-based liquid, and the
bloodstream quickly absorbs the
liquid. The additives are soluble in
the sugar-liquid just as the cough
syrup is soluble in the blood.
Diving

• As divers dive, the pressure

around them increases
causing blood and other
tissues to increase in solubility.
As a result of this and
breathing compressed air,
divers need to ascend slowly
as to not form bubbles from
nitrogen escaping from the
blood which may cause pain
and even death.(2)
