ELECTRICAL DESIGNING OF G+16

HIGH RISE BUILDING

What is Electrical Design?
 It is the designing of electrical circuits,
machinery and systems that work on
electricity. This could be as simple as a lamp
switching circuit to as complex as
interconnected grid systems. It may involve
design of electrical machinery like motor,
transformer, switchgear etc.

There are three main parts of an External electrical
system in a building.

LOAD
STEPS FOR ELECTRICAL DESIGN
1. Calculate total connected load of the
building(T.C.L)
2. Calculate transformer size for the building(K.V.A)
3. Calculate Main L.T Circuit Breaker size for
transformer(Amp)
4. Calculate bus bar size.
5. Sub circuit-breaker sizing.
6. Circuit-breaker for each flat in building.
7. Calculate Diesel Generator(D.G) size for the
building.(K.V.A)
8. Calculate Circuit-Breaker sizing for
D.G(Amp).
9. Calculate bus-bar size
10. Sub circuit breaker sizing for D.G
11. Automatic Changeover Current
Limiter(A.C.C.L) Panel design.
12. Draw SLD for Transformer side as well as D.G
side.
Selection Of Transformer Rating
Basically, a transformer is selected based on the following
parameters :
 TCL (Total Connected Load) of the building is found out.
 Peak demand:-Maximum demand of load at instantaneous
time.
 Diversity factor:-It is the ratio of total connected load to
peak demand.
 0.5-0.75 (Residential)
 0.9 (Commercial)
 1.25 (Industrial) as per NBC standards

Demand can be understood as

“All the loads are not SWITCHED ON at the same time”
IMPORTANT FORMULAE:
1. 1HP = 0.764 KW or 746 W
2. KVA = KW/cos 
3. P = √ 3VI
4. P = √3 VIcos
5. P = VIcos
6. Diversity factor= Peak demand/ Total connected
load
7. Safety factor for 3ph supply l ph consumption is 2
8. Safety factor for 3ph supply 3ph consumption is
1.25
 Step 1:- Finding T.C.L of the building.
A 2 BHK load = 5 K.W
B 4 BHK load=10 K.W
C Corridor load of each floor=2 K.W
D Common load(Lift + water pump + bore
pump + parking lights)=25 K.W
 Step 1:-
Calculate TCL of the project=
(A+B+C+D)=5x32+10x16+2x16+25
=377K.W

Add 10% extra for future expansion

=377+(10% of 377)
=414.7 KW
Calculate maximum demand based upon demand factor
(commercial)
=414.7 x 0.8
P.D=331.76 KW
 Step 2:- Transformer sizing
Converting KW in terms of KVA
KVA=KW/P.F
KVA=331.76/0.8
KVA=414.7

This KVA value is rounded off to the closest

size available which in this case is 500 KVA
 Step 3:- Main Circuit Breaker Sizing:-
W.K.T
P = √ 3VI
Where P=500 K.V.A
V=440 volts.
I=?
From above eqn.
I=P/√ 3V
I=500/ √ 3x440
I=700 Amps
This Amps value is rounded off to the closest size

 Step 4 :- Bus-bar Calculation:-
W.K.T
B.B=WIDTH X THICKNESS XCURRENT
CARRYING CAPACITY.
As we know Current carrying capacity for normal

T.C.L=10+10+2=22K.W
W.K.T
P = √3 VIcos
I=P/ √3 Vcos
I=22X1000/ √3 X440X0.8=36.1A
Safety factor for sub circuit breaker=1.25
I=36.1x1.25=45.12A

size Available which in this case is 50A
M.C.B (FP)
Step 6:-Circuit-Breaker Sizing for each load

P =VIcos
I=P/Vcos
I=5X1000/220X0.8
I=28.4A
This Amps value is rounded off to the closest
size Available which in this case is 32A
M.C.B (DP)
4BHK:- 10K.W
P = √3 VIcos
I=P/ √3 Vcos
I=10X1000/ √3 x440X0.8

Common load=25K.W(Lift+ water pump +bore
pump+lighting)
P = √3 VIcos
I=P/ √3 Vcos
I=25X1000/ √3 x440X0.8
I=41A
Safety factor for 3  supply to 1  consumption is 2.
I=41x2=82A
This Amps value is rounded off to the closest size
Available which in this case is 100A M.C.B (FP).
 Step 7:- Calculate Diesel Generator(D.G) size
for the building.(K.V.A)
Backup-50%
P.D=331.76 K.W
50% of peak demand=165.88 K.W
Converting KW in terms of KVA
KVA=KW/P.F
KVA=165.88/0.8
KVA=207.35

This KVA value is rounded off to the closest size

available which in this case is 250 KVA
 Step 8:-Circuit-Breaker Sizing for D.G:-
W.K.T
P = √ 3VI
Where P=250 K.V.A
V=440 volts.
I=?
From above eqn.
I=P/√ 3V
I=250/ √ 3x440
I=350 Amps
This Amps value is rounded off to the closest size
Available which in this case is 400A M.C.C.B (FP)
 Step 9:-Calculate bus-bar size for D.G:-
W.K.T
B.B=WIDTH X THICKNESS XCURRENT CARRYING
CAPACITY.
As we know Current carrying capacity for normal
aluminum is 0.8
Main circuit breaker size is 400Amp.
For 400 M.C.C.B
width=100mm,thickness=10mm
B.B=50X10X0.8=400
 Step 10:-Sub circuit breaker sizing for D.G:-

Total connected load for each floor

2 BHK=5 K.W (5x2 F)=10K.W
4 BHK=10K.W(10X1F)=10K.W
