AIR COMPRESSOR
Pneumatics: A system which uses compressed air is called
pneumatics.
It deals with the study of behaviour & application of
compressed air
A basic pneumatic system consist of a source of compressed
air, control valves, pipelines & pipe fittings and pneumatic
accessories like filter, regulator and lubricator

INTRODUCTION TO AIR COMPRESSOR
- AIR COMPRESSOR IS A DEVICE THAT
CONVERTS POWER (USING AN ELECTRIC
MOTOR, DIESEL OR GASOLINE ENGINE, ETC)
INTO POTENTIAL ENERGY STORED IN
PRESSURIZED AIR (I.E. COMPRESSED AIR). BY
ONE OF THE SEVERAL METHODS, AN AIR
COMPRESSOR FORCES MORE AND MORE AIR
INTO A STORAGE TANK, INCREASING THE
PRESSURE.

HOW AIR COMPRESSOR WORKS?
The inlet sucks air in for the
piston to compress.
The compress air is then
release through the discharge
valve.
In certain air compressor
models, the pressure is
produced with rotating
impellers.
TYPES OF AIR COMPRESSOR
According to the pressure delivered:
1. Low pressure air compressors (LPACs).
>which have a discharge pressure of 150 psi or less.
2. Medium pressure compressors
>which have a discharge pressure of 151 psi-1000 psi.
3. High pressure air compressors (HPACs)
>which have a discharge pressure above 1000 psi.

TYPES OF AIR COMPRESSORS
TYPES OF AIR COMPRESSORS
POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT COMPRESSORS
>is a system which compresses the air by the
displacement of a mechanical linkage reducing the volume
(since the reduction in volume due to a piston in
thermodynamics is considered as positive displacement of
the piston)
>it draw in and capture a volume of air in a chamber, then
reduce the volume of the chamber to compress the air.
12
TYPES OF AIR COMPRESSORS
RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS
>also called PISTON COMPRESSOR
>uses piston driven by a crankshaft to deliver
gases at high pressure.
13
Reciprocating Compressor
14
TYPES OF AIR COMPRESSORS
ROTARY COMPRESSORS
> a type of gas compressor that uses a rotary-
type positive-displacement mechanism.

ROTARY SCREW COMPRESSOR
17
Difference between rotary and
reciprocating compressors
>Rotary compressor uses an impeller which is in
rotary motion to compress the gases while
Reciprocating compressor involves a piston cylinder
device in which gases are filled and they compressed
due to upward movement.

19
TYPES OF AIR COMPRESSORS
DYNAMIC COMPRESSORS
>rather than physically reducing the volume of a
captured pocket of air, dynamic displacement
compressors instead speed up the air to high velocity,
and then restrict the air flow so that the reduction in
velocity causes pressure to increase.
20
TYPES OF AIR COMPRESSORS
CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS
>also called radial compressors.
>achieve a pressure rise by adding kinetic
energy/velocity to a continuous flow of fluid
through the rotor or impeller.

TYPES OF AIR COMPRESSORS
AXIAL COMPRESSORS
>a gas compressor that can continuously
pressurize gases.
>it is a rotating, airfoil-based compressor in
which a gas or working fluid principally flows
parallel to the axis of rotation.
24
Axial Compressor

25
Difference between centrifugal and axial
compressors
>in Axial compressors, the air travels along the axis of
the engine while in Centrifugal/Radial compressors,
they push the air out radially rather than along the
axis of the engine.

AXIAL COMPRESSOR
27
How do you choose the right Air compressor?
At first:
• Look at the horsepower (HP) of the air compressor:
• Try to find out CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute),
• Consider space and portability.
• Consider your power source.
And at last:
• If using a piston-type compressor, determine how large your
tank should be.
28
Regular Maintenance of air compressor
To ensure all compressor types run efficiently, don’t forget to
perform routine maintenance, such as monitoring and replacing air
compressor fittings. It is suggested that air compressor may need
daily inspections, such as:
Check for oil and air leaks
Check the differential pressure in the compressed air filter
Determine whether or not the oil in the compressor should be
changed
Verify safe operating temperature to avoid overheating the unit.
