RECREATION

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION
These are recreation services rendered to
people who are:-
• physically or mentally ill
• with disability
• retarded
THERAPEUTIC RECREATION
• Therapeutic Recreation is a specialized area in
the field of recreation that focuses specifically
on providing recreation and leisure services
for people with disabilities or as a
preventative measure for maintaining health
and wellness in order to avoid developing
disabling conditions.
• Therapeutic Recreation services are often
provided by certified Recreational Therapists
with an emphasis in three areas: 
• Treatment,
• Leisure Education,
• and Participation.

Often community TR settings do not require


certification.
 
• Treatment is provided to rehabilitate impaired
functioning from an acquired or congenital
disability in order to maintain the highest
quality of life and highest level of functioning
for the client. 
These services are provided in many settings
that includes:-
 Hospitals
 Nursing homes
 Institution for the mentally ill
 Sheltered workshop for the those with
disability
 Public and private institution that provide
rehabilitation for persons with disability.
Therapeutic Recreation in Hospitals

• Hospitals provide a wide variety of therapeutic


services.

• The objectives of any hospital recreation


programme are the same as those for the
mentally ill, disabled or retarded.
Objectives of TH

• Aid the physical, mental and emotional health


of the patient.
• Develop morale and fitness of the patient.
• Help patient to constructively use leisure time
• Help the individual satisfy social needs despite
his disability.
Recreation for the Physically Challenged

Physically challenged people may have:-


• Impaired vision
• Impaired speech
• Impaired hearing
• Neurological problems
• Orthopedic conditions
 Good recreation programmes must meet
the need s of the individual patient.

 Programmes for the disabled must differ


according to the settings and patient involved
Activities for PD
• These activities may include:-
Swimming
Arts & crafts
Games
Wheelchair basketball
Trips
Puppet show
camping
Recreation for the Mentally Challenged

Mentally challenged persons have a lower than


normal intelligence and therefore find it
difficult to cope with their environment.

These individuals enjoy:-

Dancing
Sports and games
Swimming
Camping
All social events
Industrial Recreation
• This maybe defined as those programmes
provided by a work setting to promote better
use of leisure time among employees.
Industrial recreation objectives
• These include:

Development of leisure interests that can be


carried over into life outside of the industrial
complex.
Improvement of company morale
Reduction in absenteeism and job boredom

Promotion of better relations between


employees and improvement of labour
management relations.

Improvement of industry- community


relations.
• The recreation service offered by industry vary
greatly , depending on:

 golfing to wilderness trekking,
 educational visits to entertaining stops.
 
• And regardless of size, these venues need
people to work in gift shops and restaurants,
as well as help maintain the facilities, manage
the operations and promote the attractions.
Generally, the tourism and hospitality industry is
one of the chief motivators in influencing travelers
to a destination
whether they happen to be interested in cultural
museums, heritage sites or experiencing the rugged
outdoors, and virtually anything in between.
 Since these activities require travelers to have
transportation, accommodation and food and
beverage services as part of their overall visit, other
tourism industry groups also benefit immensely.
This industry offers a wide variety of
employment opportunities, ranging from
seasonal part-time to permanent full-time
positions.
