CASE STUDY
Case studies focuses on presenting students with decision
making and problem-solving based, help clarify how course
content may translate into the real world. It is an established
research design that is used extensively in a wide variety of
disciplines.
Case study is a learning practice that shifts the emphasis from
lecture-based activities towards more student-based activities.

CASE STUDY
A case study requires you to analyze and write about a person, a
scenario or an organization or do a research. You might be given
information about the case in the assessment description, or you may be
required to invent or find your own case. The purpose of a case study is
to apply the concepts and theories you have learnt about in class to the
particular case.

AIMS OF CASE STUDY
identify the key points or issues
To describe an individual situation (case), e.g. a person, business,
organization, or institution
To consider the information you do and do not have
Define the problem/issues to be addressed precisely
Outline the objectives and the desirable outcomes
Identify resources/techniques helpful to open up the case study
sustainability and ethics in design generate ideas or alternative
solution

With case studies, you may also need to assess a student’s
demonstration of deeper understanding and cognitive skills,
such as:
• identification of a problem
• hypotheses generation
• construction of an enquiry plan
• interpretation of findings
• investigation of results collected for evidence to refine a
hypothesis and construction of a management plan

These are some criteria that could be used to assess the products of
students’ work on case studies:
How did they participate and contribute to group discussions and
engagements?
What issues did they identify and what did they focus their attention and
research on?
The type of questions did they develop?
What investigations did they inquire about?
The location of the resources and materials used.
The ways in which their investigations were conducted.
How did they present the results of the case study analysis?
