Understanding Case Studies in Education

This document discusses case studies as a learning practice that presents students with decision-making and problem-solving scenarios to help translate course content to the real world. It is used extensively across many disciplines. A case study requires analyzing a person, scenario, organization, or doing one's own research. The purpose is to apply classroom concepts and theories to a particular case. Case studies aim to identify key points, describe an individual situation, consider known and unknown information, define problems precisely, and outline objectives and desired outcomes. They assess deeper understanding through identification of problems, generation of hypotheses, construction of inquiry plans, interpretation of findings, and construction of management plans based on evidence.

With case studies, you may also need to assess a student’s
demonstration of deeper understanding and cognitive skills,
such as:

• identification of a problem
• hypotheses generation
• construction of an enquiry plan
• interpretation of findings
• investigation of results collected for evidence to refine a
hypothesis and construction of a management plan

These are some criteria that could be used to assess the products of
students’ work on case studies:

How did they participate and contribute to group discussions and

engagements?

What issues did they identify and what did they focus their attention and
research on?
The type of questions did they develop?
What investigations did they inquire about?
The location of the resources and materials used.
The ways in which their investigations were conducted.
How did they present the results of the case study analysis?
