MAXILLA

The maxilla is a vital skull bone that forms parts of the orbit, nose, and palate. It holds the upper teeth and aids in chewing. The maxilla articulates with several bones at its sutures and surfaces. It has processes like the frontal, zygomatic, alveolar, and palatine processes that form parts of the face and roof of the mouth. The maxilla plays an important structural role in the skull and upper facial region.

SURFACES
Anterior surface of the Maxilla
- Directed forwards and laterally

- Contains the following features:

• Nasal notch

• Infraorbital margin

• Infraorbital foramen

• Nasal crest

• Frontal process

• Zygomatic process

Posterior surface of the Maxilla
- Convex and directed backwards and
laterally

- Contains the following features:

 Median palatine suture

 Incisive foramen

 Palatine process of maxilla

Orbital surface (superior surface)
1. Infra-orbital groove
▪situated on the orbital surface of the body of the maxilla
▪continues as the infra orbital canal
2. Infra orbital canal
▪bony passage within the anterior wall within the maxilla
starting from the infra orbital groove and opening on the
anterior surface of the body of the maxilla
Nasal surface (medial surface)
1. Maxillary hiatus
▪opening to the maxillary sinus

2. Maxillary sinus
air-filled cavity which opens within the maxillary hiatus in the
lateral wall of the nasal cavity below the middle nasal concha
PROCESSES
FRONTAL PROCESS
• The frontal process is a
strong plate that has a
vertical ridge which
constitutes:
• The medial border of
the orbit (anterior
lacrimal crest)
• Posteriorly it forms the
lacrimal groove
together with
the lacrimal bone.

ZYGOMATIC PROCESS
• It is a pyramidal
lateral projection on
which the anterior,
superior and
posterior surface of
maxilla converge.
• Superiorly, it is

zygomatic bone. [Link]

ALVEOLAR PROCESS
• The alveolar process
is the thickest and
most spongy part of
the bone.
• It is broader behind
than in front, and
excavated into deep
cavities for the
reception of the
upper teeth. [Link]

PALATINE PROCESS
• It is a horizontal extension on
the medial side of the bone
constituting the roof of
the mouth and the floor of
the nasal cavity
• Together with the palatine bone
it forms the hard palate.
• Anteriorly it features a small
process, the anterior nasal
spine.
