Definition of learning
• Honey and Mumford (1986) learning has
occurred when someone:
“knows something they did not know earlier and
can show it”
“is able to do something which they were not able
to do before”
• Learning implies a different internal state which
may result in new behaviours and actions or
new understanding and knowledge
BLB10057-2 K Hilliger
Learning and Memory are Linked
• Learning implies that an individual has
experienced something, has stored that
experience and is able to refer to and/or
use it at a later time.

The Video: The Human Mind
Programme 1: Get Smart
(Wednesday 01/10/03 BBC1)
Uncovers what happens in our minds when we:
– Learn
– Remember
– Have original ideas
– How can we improve our ability to remember
– How we can learn physical tasks more easily
– How to encourage “Eureka” moments
BLB10057-2 K Hilliger
Things to consider during the video:
• How the mind works
• Reflect upon how your
mind works
• Application of learning
theory
• How to apply them to
yourself
• How can you learn more
effectively

memory. Understanding. Intuition. Creative and
original thought.
