Pipe with a surface crack
P r ob l e m S t at e m e nt
• During the periodic inspection of a power plant, at a section of the pipe a surface
crack of length, 2a = 4 mm and depth, b = 1 mm was found by ultrasonic
technique. The section of the pipe is of 30 mm of outer diameter 2.5 mm
thickness and 100 mm length which is subjected to a tensile pressure of 150 MPa
at a frequency of 0.5 Hz. ΔKth = 160 MPa√mm, KC = 1600 MPa√mm, C = 5.21E-
13, m = 3.
Is the pipe section can be still used in
the presence of detected crack, if yes
means estimate the remaining life before
the crack becomes through wall.

• From the above tutorial we will learn
– To get an idea on leak before break test.
– To know the relationship between crack length and depth
– Use of semi-elliptical crack
S t e ps
• Importing the CDB file into Franc3D software
• Incorporating the crack at critical location
• Perform Static Crack analysis – to determine the SIF of initial crack
• Perform Growth crack analysis – to set crack parameters
• Perform Crack propagation analysis till it becomes through-wall
• Review results
I n te r p re ta t io n
• Propagate the crack till it become through-wall and check the corresponding
length of the crack.
• Estimate the remaining life of the section in hours before it leaks.
• Interpret the propagation path by SIF value.

• No of cycles = 93510
• By considering 1 Hz (1 cycle per second)
93510/3600 = 25.975 hours
For 0.5 Hz,
25.975/0.5 = 51.95 hours
