Public Participation in EIA Process

Public participation in environmental impact assessments was legally mandated in India in 1994 and further strengthened in 1997, requiring project proponents to publish notices of public hearings where local communities can provide suggestions and objections. The 2006 amendments to the EIA notification classified projects as Category A or B, with the central government responsible for clearances of Category A projects and state authorities for Category B. Public consultation is an important part of the four-stage EIA process and helps raise awareness, obtain feedback, and facilitate monitoring once projects are operational. Appeals processes are also available under environmental laws.
