1500 bC- Eberes Papyrus
 Contains the most voluminous record of ancient
Egyptian medicine known
 The scroll contains some 700 magical formulas
and remedies. It is also evidence of a long
tradition of empiricism
 Describes poissons and natural products for
healing diseases.

V century bC- Hypocrates
 Describes some substances
as poisons; and studied the
overdose effects.
82 year bC- LEX CORNELIA
 Romans and Greeks had a good undertanding of poisoning
applications, even penal applications.
 The Lex Cornelia was the firs law to regullate poisonnings.

1 bC- Dioscorides
Greek pharmacologist and physician wrote the Materia
Medica, which is the basis for the modern pharmacopeia.
 Described and draw of several poisons.
 Understanded substances frome its origins: animal, vegetal
or mineral kingdom,
1493- Paracelsus
 Swiss German philosopher, physician, botanist, astrologer,
and general occultist.
 Experimentation is needed to know and to understand the
response

which is not a poison. The right dose differentiates
a poison from a remedy”
1787- Mateo Orfila

 Published the first toxicology “encyclopedia” pretending to


unify toxicology knowledge and to diminish the perception of
the relationship btw magic, witchery and this new science.

 Started the study of the antidotes.
 Described the transport of the poison inside the organism
