Abortion
Abortion
is the ending of pregnancy by
removing
an embryo or fetus before it
can survive outside the uterus.
The technique chosen to terminate
pregnancy depends on the stage of
pregnancy
Admissible duration of abortion –
until the 12th weeks of pregnancy
From 12th to 22nd weeks of
pregnancy – only under certain
medical conditions
Methods of abortion
Vacuum or suction aspiration (Delayed
Menstruation no more 20 days)
Dilation and curettage (D&C)
Medical abortion (from the 49th day of
pregnancy)
Vacuum or suction aspiration
The doctor examines the uterus (womb) and a
speculum is inserted into the vagina;
opens the cervix using dilators;
a tube is inserted through the cervix into the
uterus;
a hand-held suction device or suction machine
gently empties the uterus.
Dilation and curettage (D&С)
The first step in a D&C is to
dilate the cervix with Hegar
dilators.
The curette is used to gently
scrape the lining of the uterus and
remove the tissue in the uterus.
Medical abortion
The World Health Organization (WHO)
recommends an evidence-based mifepristone-
misoprostol combination regimen for medical
abortion
medical abortion causes bleeding that is much
heavier than a menstrual period.
may occur nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills
A physical exam is given two weeks later to
ensure the abortion was complete and to check for
complications
If the patient is still pregnant after taking the
medication, the doctor may give another dose of
medication or do surgical abortion.
Continuing the pregnancy is not recommended
because the drugs used for medical abortion are
known to cause severe birth defects
It is not advised for women who have
anemia,
bleeding disorders,
liver or kidney disease,
seizure disorder,
acute inflammatory bowel disease
What complications can occur with an
abortion?
Incomplete abortion
Infection
Heavy bleeding
Injury to the uterus and other organs
