Microwave Communication Basics Guide

The document discusses the basic criteria for microwave communication systems. It covers free space loss, fading margin, microwave propagation effects like refraction and multipath, the Fresnel zone, obstacles that can cause signal attenuation, and factors like rain and gases that can cause signal fading. It provides equations to calculate free space loss and Fresnel zone radius. The objective is for the first Fresnel zone to be clear of obstacles to minimize signal degradation.

• The fading margin is designed into the system

so that it will meet network outage objectives
during fading conditions

Microwave Propagation

• Due to refraction in the atmosphere the radio beam

is bent, normally slightly downwards

• The bending effect is described by the k-factor

• k = 4/3 corresponds to the “standard” atmosphere
