Types and Causes of Pollution Explained

The document defines different types of pollution including air, water, soil, noise, and light pollution. It provides details on the causes and sources of each type of pollution such as burning fossil fuels and vehicles for air pollution, and agricultural and industrial runoff for water pollution. The document also discusses pollution control through regulating limits on pollutant discharge and using devices like scrubbers, baghouses, and sewage treatment to reduce pollution.

Pollution
• The word pollution comes from the Latin
polluere that simply means contamination.
Hence, in layman terms, pollution is
something that contaminates the
environment. The presence of harmful
substances in the air, land, and water, which
can have an adverse effect on living beings
and on the environment is pollution.
Types of pollution
• Air Pollution
• Water Pollution
• Soil Pollution
• Noise Pollution
• Light Pollution
AIR POLLUTION
• Air pollution is one such form that refers to
the contamination of the air, irrespective of
indoors or outside . A major source of air
pollution results from the burning of fossil
fuels,vehicle and factory.
Water Pollution
• Water pollution is the contamination of water
bodies (like oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, aquifers,
and groundwater) usually caused due to human
activities . A major source of water pollution is
runoff from agricultural fields, industrial sites, or
urban areas.
Soil Pollution
• Soil pollution refers to anything that causes
contamination of soil and degrades
the soil quality. It occurs when the pollutants
causing the pollution reduce the quality of
the soil and convert the soil inhabitable for
microorganisms and macro organisms living in
the
Light Pollution
• Light pollution refers to the large amount of light
produced by most urban and other heavily-
populated areas
Noise Pollution
• Noise pollution typically refers to human-made
noises that are either very loud or disruptive in
manner.
Causes of different type of
pollution
Type of pollution Cause
Air pollution Burning fuels , vehicles, factories and
planes.

Water pollution Chemicals or dangerous foreign

substances ,including chemicals, sewage,
pesticides and fertilizers from agricultural
runoff,
Light pollution Urban areas , Events , Traffic jam and etc.

Agriculture and mining, dumping of

Soil pollution industrial and domestic waste in the soil
also pollutes it.
Noise pollution Vehicles , Crowd , Factories , Ships etc.
Pollution control
• Pollution control is the process of reducing or
eliminating the release
of pollutants (contaminants, usually human-
made) into the environment. It is regulated by
various environmental agencies that establish
limits for the discharge of pollutants into the
air, water, and land.
Pollution control devices
• Air pollution control
• Thermal oxidizer
• Dust collection systems
• Baghouses
• Cyclones
• Electrostatic precipitators
• Scrubbers
• Mechanically aided scrubber
• Spray tower
• Sewage treatment
• Sedimentation
• Activated sludge biotreaters
• Aerated lagoons
• Constructed wetlands Industrial wastewater treatment
• Biofilters
