TYPES OF PORTLAND

CEMENT
TYPES OF PORTLAND CEMENTS
-Sulphate resisting Portland cement (SRPC)
• Low C3A content
• C3A limited to 3.5% as per BS 4027 (BS for SRPC)
• Achieved by adding iron oxide, thereby decreasing
the proportion of alumina in the raw feed
material
• This favours the formation of C4AF instead of C3A
in the kiln.
• Higher Fe colour gives SRPC a darker colour 2
TYPES OF PORTLAND CEMENTS
-Low heat Portland cement (LHPC)
• Suitable for large structures, such as dams, where
the use of OPC will lead to large temperature
gradients within the concrete. (not accepted)
• It has a slower rate of hydration as compared to
OPC
• Slower rate of increase in strength than OPC
• NET/ FINAL Strength is similar.

3
TYPES OF PORTLAND CEMENTS
Extra rapid hardening Portland Cement
• Used where very high early concrete strength
is required or for concreting in cold countries
• It has rapid setting and hardening properties
and concrete should be compacted within 30
minutes of mixing.
• Its use in reinforced and prestressed concrete
is not recommended.
• Used when concreting foundations in rivers.

4
TYPES OF PORTLAND CEMENTS
Ultra high early strength Portland cement
• Has a greater fineness and larger gypsum
content
• Similar in composition with OPC
• UHSPC higher early strength development
than ERHPC
• Little increase in strength after 28 days

5
TYPES OF PORTLAND CEMENTS
White and coloured P C
• White P C is made from specially selected raw
materials, usually pure chalk and white clay,
containing a small quantity of iron (less than
1% of iron oxide).
• Moreover, manufacturing processes are
modified so that discolouring materials are
not included during firing or grinding.

6
TYPES OF PORTLAND CEMENTS
White and coloured P C

• Coloured P C is made by intergrinding a

chemically inert pigment with the ordinary
clinker.
• These cements are used for architectural
purposes.

7
TYPES OF PORTLAND CEMENTS
Waterproof and water repellent P C
• Produce a more impermeable fully compacted
concrete compared to OPC.
Air entraining P C
• Cement to produce a concrete more resistant
to frost attack.( adding air entraining agents
with Ordinary clinker).
