Understanding Gout: Symptoms and Management

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by excess uric acid in the bloodstream, which usually affects the big toe joint. It is characterized by sudden and severe pain in the joint, typically occurring in the middle of the night, along with tenderness, warmth, and redness. Risk factors include age, genetics, diet high in purine, obesity, alcohol intake, and family history. Nursing care focuses on pain management, range of motion exercises, adequate fluid intake, and health teaching about diet modification and lifestyle changes to prevent gout flares.
