Understanding Time Zones and UTC

Time zones divide the world into 24 regions that each keep the same standard time based on their offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). UTC is the global time standard, not a time zone itself. A country's time zone indicates how many hours ahead of or behind UTC its local time is. For example, a country in the UTC+5 time zone is 5 hours ahead of UTC, while one in UTC-5 is 5 hours behind UTC.

UTC - The World's Time Standard
• The local time in a time zone is defined by its offset
from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the world's
time standard. UTC is not a time zone.
• A country in the UTC+5 time zone is 5 hours ahead of
UTC; in the UTC-5 time zone, clocks are 5 hours behind
UTC.
