Types of Graphs in Data Management

Here are the steps to create the graph and answer the questions: 1. Create a line graph with months along the x-axis and temperatures along the y-axis. 2. Plot Jackie's town temperatures with one color/line style and Vidhu's with another to distinguish the two sets of data. 3. The graph shows that Vidhu's town has a higher average monthly temperature than Jackie's town for every month except August, when they are the same. 4. A line graph is best to show changes over time for each location. Plotting both towns on the same grid allows for direct comparison. 5. Sample questions: - For which months is the temperature difference

Data Management

Learning Goals:
• Interpret and evaluate data
in tables and graphs
•Draw labelled graphs by
hand and with a computer
Circle Graph (Pie Chart)
Displays data using a circle divided into
sectors. We use a circle graph (also
called a pie chart) to show how data
represent portions
of one whole or one
group. Notice
that each sector is
represented by %
Bar Graph
Displays data by using bars of equal width
on a grid. The bars may be vertical or
horizontal. Bar graphs are used for
comparisons.
Pictograph
Uses pictures and symbols to display data;
each picture or symbol can represent
more than one object; a key tells what
each picture represents.
Broken Line Graph
A graph showing data points joined by line
segments to show trends over time.
Continuous Line Graph
A graph in which points on the line between
the plotted points also have meaning.
Sometimes, this is a “best fit” graph where
a straight line is drawn to fit the data
points. Notice that
the independent
variable is on the X
axis, & the
dependent is on the
Y axis.
Example. A department store had sales from
sections for the last four quarters (In thousand
pesos). Present in bar graph
Department March June September December Total

Cosmetics 160 180 180 200 720

Men’s Wear 280 300 200 300 1080

Ladies Wear 860 560 500 240 2160

Kid’s Wear 60 60 100 140 360

Total 1360 1100 980 880 4320

Example. The M&N Telecom Company has
determined the cost of producing mobile phones at
its new factory. The number of mobile phones
produced and the corresponding cost of production
are shown in the table. Present the data into line
graph.
Number of Mobile Phones Produced Cost of Production
1000 ₱500,000
2000 ₱900,000
3000 ₱1,200,000
4000 ₱1,400,000
5000 ₱1,500,000
Sample Question #1
• Mrs. Ashby has a math class with 23
students. She ordered the marks her
students received from the least to the
54 55 58
greatest.
61 63 66
67 71 72
• She wanted to display these data in a 72 74 76
bar graph. 77 78 79
81 86 87
• There were too many pieces of data to 88 91 95
graph each mark separately. First, he 95 99
grouped the marks into equal intervals.
(Define)
Marks # of Students

54 55 58
61 63 66
67 71 72
72 74 76
77 78 79
81 86 87
88 91 95
95 99
Sample Question #2
• Jackie and Vidhu recorded the average monthly
temperatures in their towns for 8 months.
May June July Aug. Sept. Oct. Nov. Dec.
Jackie’s
13C 18C 23C 20C 15C 9C 2C 0C
town
Vidhu’s
18C 21C 23C 23C 18C 14C 9C 5C
town

• What kind of graph should we display the data for each town?
Circle, Bar, Line, Pictograph? Should we put both sets of data on the
same grid? Should we use a different color for each town?

• Is the average monthly temperature in Vidhu’s town always higher

than in Jackie’s town? How can you tell this from the graph?

• Write a statement about what the graph shows for each town.

• Write two questions that can be answered using your graph.
